FAQ
- Q: Is sunlight real?
- A: It's a myth.
- Q: Is it true the sky was once blue?
- A: That's nonsense.
- Q: Were there truly once stars in the sky?
- A: That's something big dark made up to sell more dark.
- Q: What do I do about shivers lunging at me from the darkness beyond my torch?
- A: Common occurance; you get used to it.
- Q: Will there ever be light?
- A: Sorry but there's nothing but pitch black in the sky above and the caves below.
- Q: What do I do about the ever encroaching darkness which devours all?
- A: [REDACTED]
Notes:
- For some Windows users Windows Defender might see this mod as a virus and I have no idea why.
- Can have compatibility issues with mods that alter: fogandlight.vsh, skycolor.fsh, underwatereffects.vsh, and sun, moon and sky textures.
- I've in the process of attempting to make a seperate shader which makes it so that nights are actually dark but I'm no shader expert, I just messed around with stuff until it worked. Removing the sun made things a lot easier here.
- If you want to be extra miserable I recommend snowball earth, low vegetation and sparse forests in your world generation.
- I created this mod as a proof of concept and for those who wanted to challenge themselves to survive in the lightless world.

Backport to 1.20.12. Will most likely work with other 1.20 versions. | |||||||

That's a downright diabolical combo
Combining this with No Temporal Stability, in a Snowball Earth world, sounds like it'd be absolutely miserable.
I love it.
Halfdan
Didn't know it worked like that, I'll look into it

Just a hope for the TrueDarkness mod you are working on, an addition to be made in the polar regions where they are fully dark if possible would be nice. All of my ice folk now that there is no true darkness in the winter up there, just perpetual sunrises :)
Hey, that's just winter in Sweden! :P
CrSilent
I actually have a mod called True Darkness in the works right now lol. It will take a while to actually be released as I suck with shaders and I'm not happy at all with its current implementation.

Amazing mod! Have you thought about making a version of this (or just adding config options which make it possible) where this basically would just remove minimal block light, essentially making deep caverns truly pitch black? and maybe making it so that on the surface, sky light at night is based on the moons phase? On full moon its vanilla and on new moon its pitch black and in betweens are interpolated?
Basically something similar to the minecraft mod called "True Darkness" or "Hardcore Darkness"? Ive been craving for such a mod for so long and I actually made a small very basic mod myself but havent updated it since 1.19 and havent really got the motivation/energy to update it yet...

I actually had a lot more ideas for this mod but I decided to keep it basic. Also yes, his lantern mod would be perfect for this. Now I just need to figure out how to make a shader for directional lighting...
This is a pretty cool concept. This combined with Salty's flickering lights mod will be legendary.
i wish there was a mod so you could see dynamic and block light from farther away
AgentOfChaos
To make a 1.20 version all it needs is to be recompiled for .net 7 so it requires minimal effort. I'll get around to it soon.
TheRealFlynn
It can be but it will have issues - the mod sets the suns brightness to 0 which causes chunks to generate without any sunlight level to be pitch black. If you remove the mod midgame all previously loaded chunks will remain dark but all newly generated ones will act like normal. I could figure out a less intrusive solution but it was the quickest way to prevent crops from growing in darkness as the sun is technically still there but not rendered.
can this mod be added and subsequently removed mid game?
is there any possiblity of a 1.20.12 backport? If so i will sing praises to you and your future lineage

I havent touched the fog code but the changes to the light are similar yes.
Are the changes to fog and light similar to the effect of this mod? https://news.kalataka.ru/caverndarkness
