Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.21.0, potentially outdated):
BuzzyBeesV1.1.7.zip  1-click install

Old worlds, made on v1.1.4 of this mod (or earlier), will probably cease to function or at the very least hives will break if updating to v1.1.5+. There is most likely not a fix and you will have to start a new world. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Warning! If you have previously played on a world that had v1.1.4 or lower loaded make sure to delete it's cache. You can find the folder in "Appdata/Roaming/VintagestoryData/Cache/unpack/BuzzyBeesVx.x.x.zip".

Bees!

  • Adds a new type of bee entity that flies around hives and feeds on flowers.
  • Bees periodically make a buzzing sound which can help with locating wild hives.
  • Changes the swarming bee model to support new bee entity.

Latest Update:

What's new in v1.1.7:

  • Updated mod for game version 1.21!
  • Added new mod icon.

In progress:

Buzzy Bees and Friends v1.2.0:

  • New model for fireflies.

Buzzy Bees and Friends v1.3.0:

  • New AI for bees to travel in and out of their hive for consistant and realistic behavior.

Compatibility:

Notes:

  • This mod will only affect hives and skeps that were placed or generated in the world after this mod is installed. If playing on an already existing world you must replace all of your hives or discover new wild hives to see the bees.
  • The bee model I've used comes from the original game, though it has yet to be officially implemented. I have merely taken the liberty of using this asset to apply and animate them into the game.

Check out my other mods!

I get that. I just feel self-concious about what I make sometimes and think it doesn't look as nice as it could. In this case however, I did not make the models for the bees. The shapes and textures I used come from the original game although they have not been implemented yet so not many people know about them. I did however animate the models and scrap together the code for spawning them around active hives. I'll change the icon back when I add the new model for fireflies in the near future!

💬 Yap, Aug 30th at 1:49 PM

I mean, I'd always prefer an in-game screenshot as the thumbnail over AI, that way I can know what to expect from it on the mod browse page. You made cute bee models, show them off!

LOL! Yeah I know it isn't the best but I thought it would look nicer than my crappy in-game screenshots with some plain text. I've never been great with graphic design so I would love to take you up on that offer!

💬 GodzillaFan_13, Aug 29th at 11:16 PM

i wouldn't mind trying to paint a logo image instead of having the clankerslop.

I'm sorry that you had to lose your world over this 😞. I never thought that changing the name and structure of a class could have this much of an impact on the game. This new update for the hive's block entity class was necessary, otherwise bees would never populate and produce honey. Hopefully this will be the last time I'll have to make a world-breaking change to the block entity class.

Same problem - when we find chunk with beehive in old chunks, we get crash to desktop.
On current world - with new version 1.1.4, even if we remove music and sound mods Symphony series - we still get this crash (Block oldBlock).
On new world - without old chunks when we find old beehives, all fine (1.1.4-1.1.6)
Probably new class for beehive, and then replacing by empty objects corrupt old chanks on current world... i don't know.
Old World from week backup - work correctly on 1.1.4 (old version)... but we loose our week progress.

It's looks like card house! xD changed one little thing - and all going to hell

P.S. I don’t think it’s worth bothering you — it’s our own fault for making the backup so long ago. The new version works perfectly in a newly generated world — I flew around the new world as GM, waited for the bees to spawn — nothing crashes, everything works fine with the same set of mods. Our current world - is totaly corrupted after update to 1.1.5, and then 1.1.6 - i don't think we can fix this. I’ve already come to terms with the fact that we’ll have to create a new world from scratch. The only two requests for the future — never change "classes" in worlds that have already been created, and do something about the hives that get overgrown with foliage after a year — the bees can’t get out..

B0YAR
Okay. I just fixed (hopefully) and re-uploaded v1.1.4 of the mod. You can download it again through the files tab at the top of the mod page. This should work with your old backup of the world since I changed the name of the entity class back to it's original name. Let me know if it fixes hives and stops the crashes/errors.

Also we find another issue on old version 1.1.4 // I don’t know whether this issue remains in the newer versions or not, since the new versions don’t work in our current world where we play.

After a game year, sometime in spring, the tree canopies grow (becoming larger and lusher than at the start), thereby covering the hives — wild bees cannot leave them until the player clears a path through the foliage.

💬 B0YAR, Aug 24th at 4:28 AM

Brun
We have an old backup almost a week old, from before the update – with the old version of the mod (1.1.4), and everything works fine there. As soon as I install 1.1.5 or 1.1.6, the game completely breaks, producing the errors mentioned above. Other mods complain that references are missing – a class was changed in 1.1.5, or beehives no longer exist in 1.1.6.

The problem is 100% in the Buzzy Bees mod – the old version 1.1.4 works without crashes, but bees don’t reproduce or move into other hives. With any newer version installed, the current game world gets completely corrupted because of the broken bees, but a brand-new freshly generated world works fine, since it spawns chunks and bees anew without this legacy class issue.

💬 Brun , Aug 24th at 3:53 AM

B0YAR
I don't think those errors are coming from Buzzy Bees. From the second spoiler it seems like it's being caused by Salty's Forest Symphony mod. The first error I am not sure of but I don't believe it's from the buzzy bee entities since they have not changed between the updates.

💬 B0YAR, Aug 24th at 3:37 AM

Brun

I celebrated too early.😕 As soon as I or my friends enter any forest, everyone gets crashed to the desktop with errors.

The client receives information from the server that a block in the world has changed (TriggerBlockChanged),
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
System.ObjectDisposedException: Cannot access a disposed object.
At some point, oldBlock turns out to be null or the tree object is not initialized, which causes the errors

We can’t continue or get out of the forest, the players’ clients keep crashing. Is our world and gameplay completely lost?

I'm glad the lag and freezes stopped 😄.

I have updated the mod to v1.1.6 which should solve your problem. Just follow the instructions written in red at the top of the mod page.

Error still appear, but now server works fine. Probably solved. Thank you!

💬 Nykolaii__, Aug 24th at 12:33 AM

💬 B0YAR, Aug 23rd at 9:20 PM

Brun
Thank you for help, we will try new version.

💬 Brun , Aug 23rd at 9:08 PM

B0YAR
I just released a new version that should automatically patch out all the old hives turning them into blank blocks. Try deleting your cache for the older version of the mod before starting the world/server. If you have any skeps make sure to replace them as well.

💬 B0YAR, Aug 23rd at 8:55 PM (modified Aug 23rd at 9:07 PM)

Brun

Also we don't have hives now, but error still spamming and have impact on server performance - lowering fps and give us freezes....

How we can fix this error or reload chunks? We can't find this command.

💬 B0YAR, Aug 23rd at 7:05 PM

Brun
This happens regularly, we sit in one place, rebuild the house, the area in the area has been exlpored, and the error constantly appears in the server's log file, while when it occurs on the server there are microfreezes with a drop in fps.

💬 Brun , Aug 23rd at 6:39 PM

B0YAR
That logging error is expected. I changed the name of the class I was using for the mod so the game will continue to throw those errors as you load chunks again. It should not be happening for newly discovered chunks though. Are you sure you're loading new chunks and does the fps loss stay or is it just a spike?

💬 B0YAR, Aug 23rd at 4:50 PM (modified Aug 23rd at 5:05 PM)

Brun

Don't sure about issue - maybe this is from Buzzwords mod. All this 2 mods recently updated.
In new bioms we have large fps losses, and server give this message.

Spoiler!
[Error] Failed loading blockentity BuzzyBeehive for block in a chunk. Will discard it. Sorry. Exception logged to verbose debug.
💬 Brun , Aug 21st at 1:33 AM

Nykolaii__
What version are you playing on? I can run some tests tomorrow and see if I can reproduce the issue

💬 Nykolaii__, Aug 20th at 7:45 PM

I love this mod but for some reason none of my bees seem to be able to produce honey? they just remain full of bees and that's it. Uninstalling it seems to have fixed it for me.
Leaving this comment in case someone else has this issue (and to let it be known). Can't tell 100% if this is the source of my problem.
Idk if it's worth looking into it, with 1.21 around the corner.

Let me know if it does turn out to be the bees! You can message on the discord thread by clicking on the discord picture on this mod page. It's faster and easier to chat on there!

💬 DrBubba, Aug 13th at 6:50 PM (modified Aug 13th at 7:19 PM)

Right on.  Very, very curious.  Going to try to disable it just in case and see if I can get the same issue, but good to know it's not likely due to this because I love those fat little bees.

Thanks, Brun

EDIT:  DIsabled and yes, same thing happened, so yay for the return of chubby lil bees.  Now to just figure out the real culprit.

💬 Brun , Aug 13th at 6:48 PM

DrBubba
It does seem that the error is coming from particle insects, however, Buzzy Bees are an actual entity same as a boar, wolf, bear, etc. and I don't use the particle system to spawn them. I also don't change anything about the base game insects so I don't believe my mod is the reason for the crash.

💬 DrBubba, Aug 13th at 6:14 PM

Heya, Brun

Running into a bug that Discord seemed to think might be related to particles from created insects and possibly from your delightful mod that I'm enjoying.  Thought I would bring it to your attention to see if they were correct?

Silverfang
Bees spawn when you are within 20 blocks of a hive and they despawn when they are at least 20 blocks away from you. They will also respawn after another bee from that hive despawns. This means that if you stay in one place long enough you might be able to catch them just as they spawn out of the hive or at the very least know which direction to check. The hive you are searching for could also be inside of a tree log or higher up in the tree making it much more difficult to track down. I wish you the best of luck on your search!

💬 Silverfang, Jul 27th at 6:30 PM

How far do the bees travel from the wild hives. I keep seeing bees but can't find a nest.

I'm planning on reducing the volume by half and how often they buzz in the next small update. A config file is still something that's new to me but I will consider adding one at some point. Sorry for the inconvenience!

💬 Ymmat, Jul 23rd at 10:26 PM

Is there a way to lower the bee buzzing sound, its so loud and the hives near my house just keep playing the sound and they are more than 20 blocks away. Ive just removed the sound for now since the vanilla one does the trick, but would love a config for that.

💬 Brun , Jul 22nd at 8:10 PM

Vinter_Nacht
I also overwrite the vanilla blockentity. I don't think compatibility is possible unless you're suggesting that I can use the block class to spawn the bees.

💬 Vinter_Nacht, Jul 22nd at 4:27 PM

Brun - I do overwrite the vanilla blockentity for the skep, but not the vanilla block for the skep.

💬 Aceldama, Jul 21st at 7:51 PM

oh that makes sense! i do live in a pretty windy place. i thought that a mod incompatibility had just broken them or something LOL. that's good to know

💬 Brun , Jul 21st at 7:27 AM

Aceldama

There are multiple reasons why a bee might land on the ground. Resting, taking shelter while is windy, or to sleep at night are the most common. I may make it less common for this to happen or make their breaks shorter in the next update as I'm already planning on tweaking some other minor behaviors.

💬 Aceldama, Jul 21st at 4:20 AM

what does it mean when they're just um... laying on the ground lol? (mod version 1.1.0, game version 1.20.12)

Hm. I just tried it myself with both Buzzy Bees and Golden Combs active and it worked just fine. It would make sense that Golden Combs would cancel out Buzzy Bees though since both mods try to override the same json file for skeps. That being said, to my knowledge, Golden Combs does not overrite the file for wild beehives so those should be working and spawning bees just fine. Only version 1.1.0 and later has the actual "bees" that fly around so that's the version you should use. The only reason I can think of is that Buzzy Bees only spawn after an instance of a hive block is first generated or placed with the mod installed. Meaning that if those hives already existed in your world and were loaded from you exploring before you updated/installed this mod then the Buzzy Bees would most likely not spawn from them. Try making a new world in creative and place a wild hive down to see if they spawn.

💬 ObiKind, Jul 15th at 8:36 PM

It may be something I'm doing wrong. but on v1.20.12 this isn't working. I do have Golden Combs, I'm still seeing the little square bee particles around wild hives and populated skeps, no cute bees to be found :-(

I tried 1.0.9 and 1.1.0 with the same result. Maybe I'm doing something wrong!

I'll see what I can do! I want to push one more update to tweak buzzy bees in the near future but I'm unsure of when it will happen since all of my time spent modding right now is for my Soap and Lye mod 😅.

💬 Vari_Ares, Jul 14th at 9:15 PM

OMG New model for fireflies ? MY DREAM come TRUE !! Can you also make a little wings sound for the fireflies ? A sound really really quiet, but that we can still listen when very near the firefly ! Thx <3 Also idk if it's possible but I hate how the fireflies in the base game disapear like nothing, and they come back etc... would be cool if they just stay always during the night !

💬 Brun , Jul 12th at 12:41 AM

HONKCLUWNE
Thanks! To answer your question about fire, smoke, and water particles I think it's best to explain why those are used in the first place. I believe a lot of the reason Tyron and his team choose to use particles over entities is for performance. Entities have a much more complex way of operating within the world and use AI Tasks to calculate where to go, how to move, and what to do. As you could imagine having hundreds of these all uniquely moving around your screen could cause lots of lag very quickly. To be honest I've already started thinking about how I can pull off the new grasshoppers and water striders by only using particles. I'm thinking it could be possible to place these particles very strategically together to form a convincing shape that resembles those insects. The reason I'm willing to go through so much trouble is because I don't want the spawning of these tiny bugs, which you may not even notice most of the time, taking up resources and places within the spawn limit. Vintage story has a max spawn cap for entities near the player and/or based on chunks around you (I think).

Love this, one of my least favorite part of Vintage Story has always been the cube shaped particle effects. How easy would it be to do something similar with fire, smoke or water particles? Can't wait for the other bugs, I've wanted something like this for bugs for a while.

I'll add it to the list 😂

💬 Willownezz, Jul 11th at 7:22 AM

Oh. I thought I was doing something wrong, or had an incompatible mod... 1.0.9 works fine. 😂

Edit: Hooray! Bees!

Professor_Dragon
Thank you for pointing this out to me! After looking over the files I've fixed the mod in the new version "1.0.9". To be honest I have no idea how it even worked at all on any game version because of how poorly it was set up 😂

💬 Professor_Dragon, Jul 4th at 6:41 AM

Not working for me on v1.20.12 (Windows).
Have restarted.

Still get regular yellow cubic particles on breaking a harvestable skep.

Have a few other mods, but none that I can see that would be bee/entity related.

I have yet to test this mod with From Golden Combs but it should be compatible.

💬 KittySandwich30, Jun 27th at 2:15 PM

Is this mod compatable with From Golden Combs? Having more sophisticated apiary equipment would go so hard with these bee models!

I have updated the mod to automatically install for players who connect to a server with it installed. Sorry for the confusion as I am still new to modding there is much for me to learn 😅.

💬 Vari_Ares, May 10th at 10:58 AM

Brun OMG DUDE !! If you manage to make the new 1.20 insects look "real" like your bees that would be BEAUTIFUL because that my dream for this game lol !

💬 Brun , May 9th at 9:58 PM

GodzillaFan_13
I had completely forgotten they even existed since I took a long break from the game. Thanks for the idea! If I ever figure out the coding part of mod making I'll be sure to add it, maybe even a config to toggle them too.

💬 GodzillaFan_13, May 8th at 10:31 PM

have you tought of expanding this to also include things like the newer grasshoppers and water skaters?

💬 Brun , May 5th at 8:55 PM

WickedSchnitzel
I believe the only way for me to do that is if I set the mod to be both "client" and "sever" which wouldn't make much sense for a theme pack that should only be used by the client. I can however make the change you're requesting and send that file over discord. My discord name is "brun1621".

💬 Vari_Ares, May 5th at 6:38 PM

OMG TY SO MUCH !! <3

💬 WickedSchnitzel, May 4th at 9:37 PM

Could you change the modinfo.json so, that this will auto-download when connecting to a server?

💬 Brun , May 4th at 3:24 PM

Vari_Ares
I've updated the mod for the newest versions!

💬 Vari_Ares, Apr 22nd at 9:13 AM

Ah... this mod is sadly discontinued... 😅😭

💬 Ijkdenem, Jan 19th at 12:38 AM

oh darn. i was hoping it changed all bees. it would have made the hives a crapton easier to spot.

💬 Vari_Ares, Nov 5th 2024 at 12:28 AM

Hi ! The mod will be updated for 1.20 ? Pleaseeee ! :c <3

💬 BraniyaKz, Dec 9th 2023 at 10:48 AM

@Brun - does this mod work if changed to client-sided?

💬 DanaCraluminum, Sep 2nd 2023 at 3:22 PM

Mod is not client side, modinfo doesn't have any `side: "Client" text

Thank you!

I changed the description to better reflect what the mod actually does. For now the wild hive and skeps will still retain their yellow cubes but in the future I may add an option for the bee models to replace them.

I don't know about that lol but thank you!

Rythillian

I was perplexed as well. When I discovered them I just assumed they were already being used for the "swarming" bees since I have never actually encountered them. Maybe in a futre update there will be a more unique way to delevop your apiculture.

💬 Brun , Sep 2nd 2023 at 2:52 PM

Night0wl

I have thought about this and tried looking for where the "bees" are coming from. I believe they are particles being made somewhere in the code for the hive/skep. I have yet to dive into coding with this game but if I ever figure it out I will surely add an option for that! Thank you for the suggestion!

💬 Night0wl, Sep 2nd 2023 at 2:19 AM

*It does not change the yellow cube models in natural hives and skeps. Only "swarming" bees.*
I would love to se it change though, it would add such realism when doing appiculture and seeing them fly around their skep :D
Maybe add a config file to enabble or disable this option. I love the mod by the way!

💬 RealNerdguin, Aug 28th 2023 at 1:43 PM

Nicely done I look forward to more mods from you!

💬 IKira, Aug 28th 2023 at 9:58 AM

Congrats, you did better than Minecraft and a entire multi-billionaire company could ever dream to do!

💬 Scarady, Aug 28th 2023 at 9:21 AM

i love them! i don't know about others but i usually use the yellow boxes to give me a hint of where the hive is

💬 znatik, Aug 28th 2023 at 8:34 AM

Very, very like it. Certainly better than flying cubes.

💬 Rythillian, Aug 28th 2023 at 3:31 AM

I always thought it was odd that hose bee models have been in the game for awhile now and yet never actually used, I assume it was gonna be for an actual entity like the butterflies
