Welcome, wanderer, to this humble plot — A mod of toil, of tweaks well-wrought.
If it suits your fancy, or stirs your thought, A follow, a comment and/or download would mean quite a lot.

- SUMMARY MOD INFO -

This mod introduces the item Long-burning firewood from the Dreadful Delight: Homesteading mod, removing the requirement for the Homesteader Collier trait to craft it.

Long-burning firewood burns at 75°C for 225 seconds. This means a stack of 32 will burn for exactly 2 real-life hours. However, at such a low temperature, the fire is useless for cooking. It is only good for heat and light, and delightful ambience! The burn temperature is roughly 10 times less than vanilla firewood, but the burn time is roughly 10 times as much. Regular firewood burns at 700°C for 24s.

Long-burning firewood

Background
This is my second mod, once again built with curiosity and respect for the many new item-based mods that preceeded it. I learned how to add this item by studying existing mods, testing, and adapting until it all finally worked. Long-burning firewood is a new item that has limited impact on vanilla gameplay but adds something new to the game that many players want.

Why a Long-burning firewood mod?

🌾 Why a Long-burning firewood mod?

With the addition of the Homesteader class, it seemed fitting to add a custom craftable that went with the Collier trait. Once the addition to Homesteading was finished, it occured to me that people who may not want the Homesteader might still want this new item. So, I stripped away the homesteader class from the mod, and opened the recipe up to all classes. If you have the Homesteading mod, you do not need this mod. However, it will be an exclusive craftable.

Accountability
🧩 Accountability means releasing a mod that functions as advertised.

This mod's features have entirely been confirmed to be functioning both mechanically, as well as visually.

This mod is effectively presented "as is" as I develop it for fun and to add something to the game I love to play. It is not a fully supported end-user product for Vintage Story; it's an ongoing work in progress. I actively want to solve issues if I can, but I must state that I do not accept responsibility for breaking your game save if you use my mod and it causes an issue for you. If I can fix it, I will. However, chosing to use any mod is on you, not me.

While I'm here, I'll also note that this mod is perpetually in development and as such, things may change. Features may be added, modified or removed. However, as the version release of this mod is 1.0, it's not intended to be changed without significant reasoning.

🧩 Dreadful Delight Server as Reference, Not Requirement

This mod was shaped by the needs of my own server—but it’s not locked to it. Long-burning firewood is designed to be modular, adaptable, and usable on any server.

Interested in joining the Dreadful Delight server? Although whitelisting is very selective, we are indeed looking for players to join our micro-community based server. Send me a message and we'll see if you're a good fit.

🧩 Credits: Microsoft Copilot AI provided image creation support, text proofreading/editing, as well as acted as a sounding board for ideas. It also assisted in understanding how to make the changes I wanted to implement successfully. With any AI support, it can be helpful, but you need to vet the information coming from it. They are often wrong about many things, but they still tend to 'lead' you to the right answer when solving coding issues. Of course, the best help is looking at examples of mods that do what you're trying to.

Jonpc042 good idea, but it's tied to my homesteader class which is also a collier (coal producer). i do like the historical accuracy though, so i am considering your suggestion.

Thanks very kindly for the positive feedback too! It means a lot!

Love your mod! This is excellently balanced, and could easily be a vanilla feature.

In real life, people would make briquettes of fine, compressed sawdust, often mixed with other materials like wax to make very stable, slow burning fuel you could simply throw on a bed of coals (no specially crafted air-restricted fireplace). It produces very little ash and does not throw off sparks as much, making it ideal for keeping a fire alive overnight to (for example) heat a small enclosure like a hunting cabin.

Perhaps consider replacing the charcoal powder with beeswax as a crafting ingredient? Just a thought.

Thanks for the mod! My chimneys will smoke forever now!

Turns out the long-burning firewood is, in fact, useful for smoking meat in the Butchering mod.

StatsBloke it is genuinely my pleasure to see the response to this mod, and I sincerely thank you for taking the time to comment.

As this is just my second mod, it's very encouraging to a new modder like myself to get any feedback. I've been watching the downloads rack up and I am just thrilled that so many people are giving this mod a download. Hearing anything about how it's impacting your VS games is amazing and I welcome all feedback, critical and the praise.

In reality, this mod took me like 10m to code because it was a simple job just to cut it out of the Homesteading mod, and revise a few mod details. I spent way more time making this page for it on this website! The modicon.png took me bloody forever. Co-pilot would just not play along!

Aside from the mod assets for posting it, the item itself took about a day of trying to work it all out and learn my way around the relevant json files. Surprisingly, Krita (free image software) has a free 'burn' filter that made the default firework texture look darker, and yet it still looks like a vanilla asset. It was stupid easy and I was really shying away from anything to do with graphics.

I also put in a fair bit of effort to try and balance it appropriately as I don't like things that make the game easier to play. I like a challenge, and I wanted it to be a chore to produce the LBF, but once produced, you're sitting on a nice reserve of heat and light, let alone the cozy atmosphere of a fire burning. I was quite pleased to learn that I couldn't even use a long-burning firewood fire to light a stack of torches yesterday. If it had worked, I would have had to further reduce the burning temperature just to make sure it was truly useless for anything in game other than heat, light and atmosphere.

Looking forward to getting more ideas and bringing them to the masses. It really is quite rewarding to see the comments, follows and downloads on your mods. Knowing you're changing other people's VS experiences, even if just a little, is really cool. Makes all the frustration of the learning process worth it!

I hope your RP event goes well!

Thanks for separating this out.  I'm running a roleplay event, and this should be fantastic for adding a little atmosphere during winter.
