I love going to the beach with the kids and looking for pretty rocks. The only problem is we come home with a big handful of treasures. You will find yourself in a similar situation.

This is a mod that aims at more realistic results that might come about if you were to actually sort through some sand on the beach. I've replaced some of the odder things like rib cages, candles, ikea some-assembly-required weapons, and glowing temporal gears, as well as the more impractical things like loose stones, with various minerals, gems, seeds, and things that I find to be mildly more believable. (At least to me)

I made this mod to compliment my lore-free playthrough. The only things you'll find in sand are naturally occurring items. There are some surprises in the rare section of the loot table like diamonds, emerald, and uranium, but no gears, books, or a fully functional musical instrument (??? how ???).

At any rate, I didn't touch bony soil, so if you still want to pan for lore items, have no fear. This mod only affects normal sand and gravel.

I also made this mod because i'm a lazy housecat homebody and don't want to go mining sometimes. So you can literally find every metal type and a few different ores. Don't judge me!

Iron oxide (just like IRL) is prevalent. In New England, most of the nails in our community during the 1800s came from orange colored water in bogs. Bog-ore. Iron deposits. The entire reason we use iron in the modern day is because its freaking everywhere. Copper and Bronze just had a lower melting temperature. So you'll find a lot of hematite.

PATCH 2.4.2
- slightly increased chance of finding nativesilver... never seems to show up but all of its friends do?
- Still no sightings after update... has ANYONE seen it?? As far as i can tell everything is coded right i just never get silver.

PATCH 2.4.1
- corrected pinkmarble item error

- Removed rhodochrosite, darkpine seeds, and wolframite (unimplemented)
- Reorganized and rebalanced entire drop table by category

PATCH 2.3.2
- fixed another marble problem because im an idiot.

PATCH 2.3.1
- fixed "stone-marble" to "stone-whitemarble" that was causing a warning to be thrown on loading.

UPDATE 2.3.0
- Removed water soluble items (clay and halite) because they break immersion.
- Added shale, granite, and marble stones to commonly found items (will work well with my 'HulkSmash' mortar and pestle mod!)
- Increased termite and compost frequency

PATCH 2.2.2
- fixed 'egg' error (verified)

PATCH 2.2.1
- fixed 'egg' and 'rawcassava' errors

UPDATE 2.2
- Decreased chance of berries and colored quartz
- Increased chance of termites, cattail roots, papyrus roots, tule roots, sticks, feathers, compost, and bones
- Removed cooked roots

PATCH 2.1.3
- Confirmed compatibility with 1.20.10
- Increased rarity of vegetable and tree seeds by 150%
- Added mod icon to mod folder

UPDATE 2.1
So I was thinking I was doing dice rolls for each of these items but after some testing I don't think that's actually the case. Supposedly there's a 1 in 100 chance of finding tree seeds and I've found like 10 of them in the space of 30 blocks of sand so. Something's a little off. I did some small fixes but I'm a little bummed out that random number generators are more complicated that what i was imagining.
- Reversed sorting order, assuming chances are being taken in the wrong direction.
- Repaired sphalerite and cassava codenames.
- Swapped malachite with nativecopper 'cause its prettier
- Increased chance of finding grubs for more mid-panning snacks
- Added comments about chances
- Added "var" variable because drops were feeling a little too lucky? More testing needed.

2.0.2 prettyLittleThings 27 May 9th at 2:35 AM prettyLittleThings.zip 1-click install
  • Initial release. I'm a linux dork so I haven't figured out how to update to 1.20.10 using a flatpak yet but its probably fine.
  • I made this in like four hours and its my first mod for this game. But it's not super complex so. Should be ok.

This is so neat! I hope you find the time/motivation for an update. <3

💬 Noblesix84, Sep 29th at 8:59 PM

I'm not sure if it's a mod issue or just poor luck but I haven't noticed a change in the drops.

💬 Ailith, Sep 12th at 8:58 AM (modified Sep 12th at 8:59 AM)

Mod tested not functioning in 1.21.1 on my end as of this post, in case anyone else is just checking comments if potentially outdated mods still work.

💬 Jrpro1st, Aug 26th at 6:10 PM

TaimatCompany Is there any plans to update this mod for 1.21, this mod is the only way I find panning fun

💬 TaimatCompany , Aug 1st at 12:11 PM (modified Aug 1st at 12:14 PM)

GreenDragonette Absolutely!! Feel free to copy any or all of my mod to make something that will play better for you <3 I'm not always in a "Vintage Story Mood", and programming and modding can be hard work so please by all means, build something everyone can enjoy :)

Noodles35 Yeah that's very strange - you may want to check your local game cache for leftover mod references. Did you *ever* have "WildFarmingRevival" installed? It may have left behind some traces if so.

💬 Noodles35, Jul 27th at 4:43 PM

Hi! Awesome mod i love how much more variety there is for panning it makes it so much more fun and exciting! However i have been having some crashes recently where it says "failed resolving itemdrop or smelted stack" for almost every WildfarmingRevival item drop for panning. I don't know if its actually because of you or not but just wondering because they all say for panning. It's a problem i guess because i don't even have that mod installed so i guess some mod i have must have that as a dependency now for some reason. I'm not sure tho im not a modder or anything. But if you haven't coded any of that in there then I can narrow down my list of mods to look into. Thanks!

💬 GreenDragonette, Jul 16th at 11:07 AM

Hello! Just downloaded your mod, looking forward to shinies :) I have a question, if I wanted to make a similar one, but with bone soil for no monsters run so it drops way more temporal gears, do you think it would work if I just used your mod as a template but changed the panning block and hand-inputted the rest of the info from the wiki (and would I have your permission?)? The only experience I have with modding so far in this game is changing values in downloaded mods so I'm flying pretty blind when it comes to their creation (^u^')

💬 TaimatCompany , Jun 3rd at 11:52 PM

Majestik ooooo thank you for testing!! I'm so relieved haha

💬 Majestik, May 31st at 4:59 PM

TaimatCompany I installed the mod today, and after ~32 block of gravel panned, I found one native silver nugget ! So it seems to work. My other mods that touch panning are Dana Tweaks and Knapster, but I didn't modify any settings with these mods so idk if that influenced something or not.

💬 TaimatCompany , May 27th at 12:44 AM

Has anyone managed to get a nativesilver nugget??? IT has the same chance as cassiterite but i have never seen one yet. Last update i increased the chances jsut to see if it would pop up but no luck yet. Wondering if there's a code problem but everything looks right... idk

💬 SevenIndex, May 24th at 6:09 PM

Ryumachinae

There's actually already an automatic sifter mod, Auto-Sifter. Granted it's not the cool and immersive multi-stage sifting contraption you're dreaming of, but I've been using this mod in my own world and it's easily one of my favorites.

💬 Ryumachinae, May 24th at 4:51 AM

yeah its totally okay if thats not within your ability right now learning to mod takes a LONG time, id do it myself if i wasnt already in a dozen other projects lol

💬 TaimatCompany , May 24th at 3:27 AM

Ryumachinae thats sounds really interesting. I don't make custom models, I prefer to use existing content and infrastructure as much as possible. Modified clones and such like the mortar bowl in "hulksmash". Super interesting idea though!

💬 Ryumachinae, May 23rd at 8:13 PM

Also, I understand if this is beyond the scope of your mod, but I would be really interested in finding a mod that adds some sort of auto-sieve construction. I've seen IRL ones where its like a very big staircase you run water over, and the steps are shaped differently to catch particular things. You have a VERY good grasp of the kind of realistic balancing I'm looking for, so if you're ever looking for what to make next, I'd HIGHLY reccomend making such a thing :) It could be more late-game technology that could even use mechanical power. In fact, when paired with the Rivers mod, and the Water Wheel mod, it could be amazing to have!

💬 Ryumachinae, May 23rd at 8:03 PM

Excellent, I did find panning to be a bit overpowered. However I'm suprised there's no mention of how the drops vary based on gravel type, is that a thing or is all gravel essentially the same?

💬 Ototinho, May 22nd at 1:59 PM

oh, yeah you're right XD i didn't notice, sorry. but yeah, seeing like this it makes more sense now

💬 TaimatCompany , May 22nd at 12:24 AM

Ototinho Malachite is a copper ore and is very common. Cassiterite is still a 1 in 50 shot and I actually find quite a decent amount when i'm panning.

I didn't precisely want to eliminate mining altogether, just supplement it when it seems like there's just zero tin around or the copper is really rare or just a chance to find silver or gold whereever you are.

metasynthie Yeah I doubt I'd be able to make them compatible. PNP looks WICKED cool though. I thought that wasn't released yet? I haven't looked at the code. I might check that out. Maybe there's a way to blend them somehow. I'd have to talk to the author and see how they feel about it.

💬 Ototinho, May 21st at 8:44 PM

hey, i think copper and cassiterite shoud be more common or at least switch the odds they have in a gameplay perspective. ik you're making a more realistic mod and i love the idea, but i also think since people normally uses panning for early game matals it would be nice to up those chances a bit (ngl 1 in 100 for copper is kinda of a gamble XD)

💬 metasynthie, May 21st at 4:02 PM

I've been looking at the pan.json source for this mod and another "more interesting panning" mod -- Pan and Prospect [Pre-release] - Vintage Story Mod DB

It seems like these probably won't work together because P&P has a custom pan, and PLT replaces the whole panning table? Or even if they did, the rate for some nuggets would be too high.

However, it would really cool to have a compatibility patch, not sure what would be involved, but I guess using P&Ps nugget chances and adding everything else from PLT. Just a suggestion!

💬 TaimatCompany , May 11th at 10:49 PM

Nicole_Evermore im so glad you like it!

💬 Nicole_Evermore, May 11th at 7:37 PM

Thank goodness, I've been tearing my hair out trying to find clay naturally but have had no luck at all for several hours now.

💬 TaimatCompany , May 10th at 9:40 PM

fixed

💬 TaimatCompany , May 10th at 9:12 PM

or not. sorry. egg error is now slightly different. i'll try something else.

💬 TaimatCompany , May 10th at 8:23 PM

Kasel fixed. I'll upload in a moment.
