DISCLAIMER: This mod is nowhere near being complete yet and I don't recommend using it in a long term world. If you really like the idea and want to play it, a mod like this already exists and it does everything this mod does, way better. In fact it's so good that if I had seen it before I wouldn't have even made this mod in the first place. This mod will eventually grow and become its own thing, but until then I recommend you to use CreativeRealms' incredible mod instead.

This mod aims to make the early game feel more realistic and challenging by adding another step to crafting stone tools. It is still in active development and a lot more will be added in the future. This is my first mod ever so I am open to all kinds of suggestions and criticism. I hope you like it.

The mod adds 5 new items. Here is a list of the items and what they do:

  • Fresh grass: Cutting tallgrass with a knife, scythe or sharpened stone now makes it drop fresh grass instead of dry grass. It is used in crafting grass fibers. It dries into dry grass in 10 in-game hours.
  • Grass fibers: Dries into dry grass fibers in 20 in-game hours.
  • Dry grass fibers: Combining 9 of them in the crafting grid makes a grass twine.
  • Grass twine: Used in binding tool heads to handles. For now it only affects certain axes, hoes, shovels, knives and spears.
  • Sharpened stone: A new primitive knife with little durability and slow mining speed. It is the only tool you can make in the first day of the game.

Compatibility

At the moment it seems incompatible with most (if not all) other mods that affect grass in any way or form. It is also probably incompatible with mods that affect tool recipes. I am working on a compatibility update right now so hopefully these will be fixed soon.

Roadmap (sorted by priority)

  1. Tweak: Compatibility with Art of Growing and Wildgrass mods
  2. Tweak: Grass twine being needed for stone tools only (currently some metal tools also need it which is an unintentional feature)
  3. Feature: Wooden spear item
  4. Feature: More types of fibers and twines, potentially affecting the tool's durability
  5. Tweak: More steps for making fibers from grass
  6. Tweak: Making tools necessary for breaking blocks

vlad Thanks for introducing me to this mod. It is pretty much a 1000% better version of my mod lol. It's exactly the type of mod I'm looking for, I will definitely check it out. Hopefully I will make my mod distinct enough from it in the long term.

Swedneck Thank you for the suggestion, I have completely overlooked the idea of other mods changing tool recipes but it now seems like a big problem that needs to be solved. I will look into making a setting for it like you have suggested. Also don't worry about the grass, it already dries into the vanilla dry grass.

I also had the digging stick idea (I used to call it Sharpened stick) when I first started developing the mod and I still consider it, but the way I want it to work is not exactly compatible with how tools work in the vanilla game so I will add it later when I get better at modding. However your idea of replacing the stone shovel with it sounds very interesting, I will think about it.

I originally intended to make tools mandatory even for digging dirt and I was going to add the sharpened stick alongside the sharpened stone as another tier 0 tool. I also wanted making a grass twine to have more steps and take more time. But apparently there isn't a base miningSpeed or toolTier value for the player that I can edit, so for it to work I would have to patch all the blocks one by one and it would probably make the mod incompatible with everything else so I abandoned the idea for now. Though I want to eventually return to that idea either in a future update of this mod or in a new separate mod.

StardustKara Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful mod. I will definitely look into making them compatible. Making a feature like it in this mod was one of my long term goals anyways, so it would be awesome if I can make them both work together like addons of each other.

I haven't tried it yet admittedly, but this would go incredibly well with the toolsmith mod if you can add compatibility between them. It would make the bindings have more depth.

This looks interesting!
But the custom tool crafting is at the very least not needed if you have another mod that changes tool crafting (and might outright be incompatible), so it'd be good to have an option to disable that part of this mod.
I'd also be nice to have a setting for fresh grass to simply dry into the standard Dry Grass item, for easy compatibility.

Aside from that, one idea i have is adding and maybe replacing the stone shovel with simply using sticks to dig, which could just be implemented as a new "digging stick" tool crafted from a normal stick. Stone shovels really aren't a thing IRL and you would instead just use a sturdy stick to dig into the soil.

Echoweaver I am glad you found it interesting. Unfortunately though I'm not sure if I can recommend using this mod in your new save yet, especially depending on what other mods you will use. I will explain why, but first let me answer your questions:

  • Yes, the idea is for stone tools (Tier 1 tools) to not be accessible in the beginning of the game. This will encourage players to explore the world and collect whatever they can in the first day. If you act fast enough, you can have enough dry grass to make a bed before it gets dark.
  • The grass can dry in your inventory, on the ground, or even in containers. I'm not sure if the drying rates change depending on where you put it but as far as I know it doesn't. I will also add the ability to make piles of grass in the later versions so that it feels more realistic.
  • For most tools it is only for stone age, but for some of them (hoe and shovel I think) it is required in the metal age as well. This was unintentional and I will fix this soon in later versions. Sorry for the inconvenience lol.

Unfortunately, because I am very inexperienced, this mod isn't compatible with any other mods that affect grass. So if you have a mod that adds new grass variants or a mod that changes grass drops or anything similar to these, you should either test it out in a separate world to see if it works or not, or you should just disable this mod. I will make a compatibility update for some mods soon but until then consider it incompatible with any other mod related to grass.

This is a fascinating idea. I'm just planning out a run of the game where I stay at the Stone and Pottery ages for at least a year. I think those early tech levels are interesting and don't get enough attention.

So the idea here is that you're confined to a sharpened stone for at least the 20 hours necessary to dry out enough grass fibers to build Stone Age tools? That's just for Stone Age, right? It could get annoying if you had to have dry grass fibers handy to build tools in the metal ages.

How is the grass dried? Do you put it out to dry or keep it in your inventory. If you put it out to dry, is that just done on the ground, since you can't craft any surfaces?

animatiV I am glad to hear that. Make sure to share your thoughts about it after you try it!

Interesting mod. I'd love to install it when I start the game again.
