What it dooo : 

When a player equips a torch item (configurable ), nearby bears and wolves get a temporary “fear of fire” behavior. 
If you want to a detailled description of the behavior i'll put it under this spoiler , or you can leave their behavior cryptic

By default the temporary fear behavior lasts 20 seconds , once those 20 seconds are up the animal gets accustomed to the fire and becomes firebrave (no longer fearful of fire)

  • Bear behavior
    Most of the time  a bear will be Cautious (80%) : it faces you and will be idle or in standing animation,. If you push your luck and get closer to it , it can still swipe.
    There’s also a configurable chance to flee(10%), or to ignore the fire(10%) (“attack anyway”) 

  • Wolf behavior
    Wolves usually Stay Close without attacking by orbiting you and staying a safe distance, they stop orbiting until re-engaged.

  • Torch 
    if you put the torch away the animal will ignore the fear behavior 
    if you put back the torch after unequipping it the fear behavior will return
    The fear effect ticks down even if you put the torch away. When the timer ends, animals can become firebrave (enabled by default)  meaning future torches won’t scare them

    both creatures, If attacked during the fear timer will gain firebrave and attack you

- behavior now extends to firepits and other blocks if configured and firebrave can be ignored by these blocks as well (configurable)
- You can throw a torch for a chance to make an animal flee even if it has firebrave and remove its firebrave trait (configurable)



Why it was made  :

I find myself victim of many predators without having a chance to establish my first camp , this maybe can help those scenarios

Personal Notes: 

Please note that any entity tagged with firebrave wil attack you directly next time, it is kept track of by the server so it only resets when the server restarts

Couple thoughts:

If an animal catches fire, it should just go full-fear regardless of previous states (Or maybe if it already has firebrave there's a slim 10-25% chance to maintain it) 

Smacking an animal with a lit torch, should have a chance to ignite the animal and a chance to extinguish the torch (Both simultaneously)

Campfires and other open flames should cause all animals to flee/navigate a set distance away if they aren't already reacting to other stimuli.

Slight issue with this mod, since the new behaviors seem to override the vanilla behaviors completely(?), you can kind of cheese bears. If you just run up to them with a torch, and they do their "Cautious" behavior, you can back off, and kind of just throw spears out of their swipe range, and skewer them to death and they don't react at all until they decide whether or not they're afraid of the fire.

This is a very cool mod! Make animals more interesting and they look "smarter" and less "psycho killer" :D

 

SUGGESTION: This behavior could be extended to rusty creatures too (they fear the sunlight)

This kind of behavior is costly in terms of performances to do in a mod , it can be done but not only is it heavy on the server but also complex to code and complex to get "right" , issues with the animations overlapping , stopping / starting when they shouldn't , multiplayer player priority , other behaviors tasks overlapp / priority management , it's hard

i feel like this kind of behavior if done should be implemented in the game instead by the developpers

i feel like this mod wold work better with LOS aka line of site + flame  instead of just working on flame. so say your looking forward and  if ther emutiple wolves one might circle you and attack from behind.

I'm quite interested in what you managed to achieve with blocks (animals fleeing lit firepits). I feel like there is potential there, like drifters being afraid of salt piles or silver for folklore reasons.

Yes I agree for Pet AI , I just never played with it tbh 
For the left click interaction, it could be done i think , but it would require much more time especially for the animation part i have never done that before
It's on my list !

Hi Sonito, thank you for making the mod!
I was wondering, is it possible to create an behaviour or action, more specifically an left-click interaction with torch on hand that trigger these effects?
I feel that just holding the item can be very intrusive on overall gameplay, causing things like the Pet AI incomatibility. This could be considered more like an "feature" rather than incompatibility if turning these effects towards more player input (as example, I wouldn't try to scare my own "dogs" if I'm just leisuring with them at night with a torch).

Added : If you throw a torch at an animal (even if he is firebrave) , it has a chance to make him flee and lose firebrave, again the item "torch" is configurable you can choose whatever item you  want  to add if needed in the config

Yeah for Sure Pet AI is not going to be compatible , i'll put it on my list but it's not a priority

Potential bug with Pet AI and Tamable Wolves. I took out a torch to light a fire pit and all my pets ran off. Now I can't feed them (torch removed).

yup I still have lots of work to do on other mods plus my dayjob but once I add the fire pit feature without any hitches I'll definitely look up compatibility with popular creature mods,

Good mod, should be in vanilla

If you are so inclined, firepit fire making all predators keep their distance (no chance to become firebrave to this type of fire) to keep small camps a bit more safe would be cool

gona give it a try not afraid of them critters , but built base in forest and they both spawn like every 30-45 minutes
