A pottery wheel for making clay items!

To use simply crouch + RMB with clay in hand to select the recipe. After a recipe is selected use RMB with clay in hand to start forming the clay.

The clay can be retrieved from the wheel by using crouch + RMB with an empty hand.

Powering the wheel with mechanical power from below will double the speed of clay forming but still requires interacting with the pottery wheel.


The mod can now be configured via potterywheel.json located in AppData/Roaming/VintagestoryData/ModConfig
The file should be automatically created on world load if it does not exist.

Currently there are 2 config options:

  • "voxelsPerUse" controls how many voxels are filled per tick when forming clay
  • "poweredMultiplier" controls the multiplier applied when the wheel is powered

Setting these values too high will cause glitchy behavior, I recommend keeping it so voxelsPerUse stays below ~20.

The wheel seems to run at different speeds for different players on the server I run.  Is this because of their ping?  Not sure why it would be happening.  I can make four bowls in the time it takes another player to place down the first layer of two bowls of a four bowl set.

Voltage seem 1.1.5 is broken the placed pottery wheel vanishes and does not show up in the hand book any more
tested this on the main server and test server
had to back date to 1.1.4 for everything to revert

Voltage Yeah, we use the pottery wheel on our server and wanted to make sure people get XP on xSkill when using it. I'll also be dropping another addon patch for xSkill that should fix a lot of issues with it. ATM, it won't be a fork—just an addon patch. Also, I'm going to make a remaster version of xSkill for our server soon-ish, so I need to learn how the mod works inside and out before we build our own system using it as a base. If you come up with any other cool systems for the game like the pottery wheel, let me know and I'll see about dropping an xSkill patch for them.

Also, a recommendation to the dev of Pottery Wheel: I recommend making it so the config syncs between the server and client, because at the moment if the server changes the Pottery Wheel config, the player will be on the default config values.

I am working on a patch mod that adds XSkill support for the pottery wheel. It is a separate mod, so you have to download it with this mod and XSkills, but it should give you XP at the same rate normal clay making does. Should have it out sometime today.

Great idea for a mod, only unfortunate that the default values are so low it's basically not worth using at all unless every user changes the code. My hands would rather do bursts of 2-3 vessels with breaks between than spend 10 minutes holding right click per vessel. While double the voxels sounds good on paper for the benefits of mechanical power, in practice it really feels like nothing, as I'm still just standing there holding right click for way too long.

I always wondered why a pottery wheel was never a thing in VS. I get manually doing pottery but after a while it does cramp your hands when you need to make all the pottery yourself in singleplayer or when you are the dedicated pottery guy in a group.

can value of voxelsperuse be higher than 2 by defult? It's pointless to use it without Windmil, and it's sad cause it should help you more than clay forming on the ground when you're bending over...

Would it be possible to add an option to set the wheel to automatically start the same recipe again if it is clicked with more clay after recipe completion? It'd be really, really convenient to have a way to bulk-craft things without needing to crouch-right click every time.

Is poweredMultiplier multiplied by wind %? Seems kind of meh otherwise. Voltage


Edit: In fact it's doing nothing at all. I have my values set to 1 and 5, initially they were 1 and 2 and then I had tried 1 and 3. It still adds the same amount on the same wind % while powered.

I felt soul-shaking disappointment when I realized that standing or sitting on top of the pottery wheel doesn't make me spin around. Imagine the synergy with combat overhaul if I could click and swing and have the spinning do the rest to turn me into a blender.

Hi Voltage, I love this concept you've made into your mod, but I'm having an issue where connecting the pottery wheel to my windmill with a transmission and clutch is causing the pottery wheel to render incorrectly. When the clutch is disconnected and you first place the block down, then engage the clutch, the rotating texture will appear inside of the static texture and both will render. I've also encountered an issue where the pottery wheel is already moving and you disengage the clutch; the texture renders invisible. It seems to be a cosmetic issue, since the functionality of the block remains viable in both states.

The config file the mod generates for end user clients does not match the settings we set for the server no matter what we do (Deleting the file and letting the client regenerate it creates it with the default settings)

For instance, on our server we set it to 1 voxel with a 16x power speed multiplier, but since the user clients only get the default of 1 voxel and 2x multiplier there is no way for them to benefit from the speed without manually setting the config up on their machines which is not ideal for a server setting for us to have to have every single user make this change.

We want them to have the server settings and not the default that the mod creates. Is there some change you can make to make this server friendly in this regard?

using this mod on my server 1.19.8 both the mod in my folder and in the servers folder are the same 1.1.1 version but i keep getting the error that an action i (or my client) did caused an unhandled exception but doesnt give me any more info than that. the wheel works fine in single player.

I adore this mod. There is so little missing for it to be perfect: water/wind to automaticly turn.

Would you be willing to make a similar mod for fabrics?

I did figure out why the pottery wheel was kicking me from the server. It seems that the client side config needs to either match or at the very least be default. I also did some testing and if a server has the config set faster, but the client is default then the pottery wheel will go at the default speed for that particular player. If the client is set faster than the server it results in an exception and a kick from the server.

As it stands, while I love the concept of the pottery wheel, I think the default configs are a bit slow, especially when you take the duplicate layer option into account for regular clay forming. I'd like to suggest bumping up the default to 2 voxels per use, maybe even 4 if you feel particularly generous, to bring it on-par with Advanced Clayforming™.

Im currently trying to use a pottery wheel on a server and it keeps kicking me saying "An action you (or your client) did caused an unhandled exception" The server admins cant figure it out and are theorizing it may be an issue with the mod its self

I love this mod and enjoy using it. My only gripe is that, while using it, roughly every few seconds my game will freeze for a second or two, only while using the pottery wheel. It's consistent and replicatable for me. I talked about it in the discord and was recommended I point it out here.

In client debug, this shows when I start using the pottery wheel:

Again, consistently replicatable for me, every time it freezes while using pottery wheel, the server stops ticking. The game doesn't crash or anything, I can keep playing after a second or two of my game being frozen, so it's only a minor annoyance at worst. Just figured I'd bring it up.

 

EDIT: Note, upon looking at this mod page and realizing it has a config, changing the pixels per use from 1 (default) to 10 has actually somehow fixed the hitching issue for me. Maybe because I spend less time on the wheel, but either way it's a lot better now lol!

would love to have this mod's powered functionality scale with mechanical power, sort of like querns and the auto sifter mod. I think 20 voxels per use as an upper limit is totally reasonable, as well lmao. Can imagine a super speed pottery wheel spinning crazy fast, finishing clay things in less than a second

There is a Typo on the game version in the modinfo.json who prevents the mod to work, its jut a missing . (dot) on the version
it is showing on the modinfo.json like 1.18.0-pre 3

how it is:

Verlia You won't get any experience points when using the wheel and you won't recieve any benefits from the abilities when using the wheel, but otherwise it shouldn't break.
