Don't use this anymore, the game already has chiseled grass that works great now.
Downsides
It does not change color with the seasons or biomes, so it will never match the surrounding exactly. Thanks to Tels I got this to work, but as soon as I added this ability it stopped being chisel-able. Haven't given up yet, but this may prove impossible.
Upsides
fixes a problem where grass blocks half under another block revert to dirt, leaving dirt patches at the edges of your builds.
Allows you to combine a grass block with something else, so you can have cleaner or diagonal edges on paths or retaining walls.
Allows you to have grass in an oasis in the desert biomes, since grass will not grow on dirt in those biomes. And many others I’m sure you will think of.
To-do list
Continue trying to fix collar change problem.
Add a chisel-able path block (will try to retain walk speed buff) but no promises.
Lastly, if anyone with more skill wishes to take this idea and do it right. You have my very best wishes. All I ask is publish it so I can have It too.

All sounds should be correct now. Reduced break resistance to match other soils. Placement in creative menu now same as other soils. | |||||||

This mod is totally obsolete now use a chisel on any grass block in the game, and it will become chiseled grass.
When you break it, it will look like dirt in your inventory and be called soil.
But when you place it again, it becomes chiseled grass again.
And unlike this version, the one in game changes colors with the seasons and always matches the surrounding grass.
The devs first attempt at this went all screwy and turned orange when it was combined with other mats in one block.
But that has been worked out now.
So this mod is obsolete and broken, compared to vanilla chiseled grass.
as I tested, still working on 1.20.9
thnks Craluminum I got around to reading all about it. It apears it is only in creative so might still be a place for a mod to add a recipe to survival. but eather way it apears we will finaly have a chisleable grass block that colors corectly I cant tell you how happy this makes me. now all we need is a chiselable road block (Im working on it now)

Craluminum I'm not sure what you ment. Are you saying they have added chiselable grass blocks to the game in 1.18 if so Friggin great then I will not have to wory about updateing this thing any more at all.
as long as we can make it in survival. if not then at least I should be able to get this to work right finaly. Post back and clarify if you can but im going to go read up on 1.18 see if i can find what you are refering to. eather way thnks for the post

Feature: Chiseled blocks can now support climate/season colored blocks. Added "creativegrass" to the creative inventory as an example
