    • Auto-step feature

Config

  • Walking speed, hunger rate values and auto step feature are fully configurable inside VintagestoryData\ModConfig, in the folder named WalkingSticks. Each stick has an individual config file. All you need to do is open the desired file with notepad.
    • To change walking speed or hunger rate, just edit the value (for example, "WalkingSpeed": 5.0 → "WalkingSpeed": 15.0) and save.
    • To disable auto-step, edit the config and change the value from true to false.
  • (This configuration is server-authoritative, meaning all clients connected to the server receive these configuration values directly from it, this is to prevent cheating!)

Roadmap (I’m still new to modding, so I don’t know exactly how long it'll take, but I really want to keep expanding the mod!)

  • Initial release: baseline walking stick.
  • Walking stick variants:
    • Crude walking stick - simpler option that gives the vibe of picking up a random stick you found along the way, crafted with less resourses, gives less benefits. Added in The Wayfarer Update
    • Reinforced walking stick - stronger, upgraded version of the stick, reinforced with metal rod, hoops and some leather for extra boink power. Added in The Wayfarer Update
    • Garrote or shepherd's leap stick - an option that would help with traversing rugged terrain.
    • An architect's walking stick - an option that works like a measuring tape and lets you measure distances between blocks.
    • Pathfinder's walking stick - a variant with a small telescope mounted on top that lets you scan the path ahead, or even stargaze if you feel like it.
    • Bindle stick - a variant with a linen sack attach at the end, adding the ability to store couple items in the sack.
    • Blackthorn walking stick - also called a Shillelagh, an early game combat variant made from a thorny branch. (suggested by the user RumpleRatskin)
    • Doctor's walking stick - A stick that reveals another player’s health and temporal stability without direct contact, reducing the risk of falling ill yourself!
  • Elk attachment - ability to attach walking stick to the elk. Added in The Wayfarer Update
  • Lantern attachment - option to attach lantern into a baseline variant of the stick. Added in The Wayfarer Update
  • More customization options!
  • Walk sound effects based on the stick variant and the type of ground (suggested by the user Vari_Ares)

Compatibility/known issues

  • (0) Critical Issues:
  • (1) Moderate Issues:
    • Snowshoes mod - may cause stattering when entering the snow (reported by 2 user) Solved! In order to fix this issue, enter %appdata% go to VintagestoryData\ModConfig and open the file named Snowshoes with Notepad. Inside, change the radiusCheckFrequency value from 50 to 200 and save. (200 worked for me, but if you still experience stuttering, try 250, 300, and so on) Thanks to LivCi for the suggestion!
  • (2) Minor Issues:
    • Salty's Manual: Tool Crafting - detects the walking stick as a usable handle, so be careful! (reported by 1 user) Fixed on the other mod’s end
    • Salty´s Immersive: Lanterns - lantern variant wobbles a bit (reported by 3 users) Fixed on the other mod’s end
    • Alternative Offhand Penalty -  adds an unintended -10% hunger modifier when holding the stick in the offhand, stacking on top of the base value (reported by 1 users) Sort of fixed in the Update: fix.v3
    • Canoe mod 1.21 - the player model may sometimes become invisible while riding a canoe when the stick is equipped (reported by 1 users) Fixed in the Update: fix.v3

Important notes

  • Any mod that overrides default walk animation will probably have some effect on the custom walk animation that the mod has.
  • It is recommended to play with immersive first person mode turned off, as my animations are based on the standard view.
  • As a new modder, I'm still learning the ropes, so please bear with me as I develop my skills. I test each mod before the upload, however there is always the human factor. It is very important to always back up your world saves before installing any mods.

This is neat stuff, and I particularly like the roadmap items each coming with a lightweight gameplay gimmick, lots of substance born from just a little variation. Waiting on the next major update for a fresh server with friends, but I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Seeing that the comments are pretty lively and actively used for idea farming, I'll throw into the suggestion bin- apparently seconding EduardoTV way at the bottom of the comments- the notion of a Shepherd's Axe. Used by half a dozen or more peoples in Carpathia and its surrounds under as many or more names, it'd be a long axe-cane with lesser tree felling speed due to its lighter, leaner construction, better plant/leaf clearing speed on the flip side, and play the part of a weapon better than vanilla tool axes while remaining capable of treecutting, an ability which weapon mod axes always or almost always don't retain. Not something you use to clearcut, but rather to combine a walking stick with a hybrid forestry multitool-sidearm, as useful for the hunter on the stalk in thick brush as for a pastoralist just in reach of the predator infested woods or any coppicer actively taming old growth forest.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepherd%27s_axe

Also citing the humble staff sling to send some love the Malefactor's way, whether it would end up tied to his perk or not. It's a walking staff. It has a sling stuck on the top end of it that has more leverage to do more damage than the average sling and also act as a quarterstaff up close. That's about all there is to it, really. Has a tiny breach of infamy from its otherwise obscure status in being a sometimes ubiquitous ranged option in Battle Brothers for being realistically deadly with free ammo in the form of rocks, coming in both plain wooden and leather-wrapped metal-capped staff variants. Considering that parallel to those exact variants existing here, maybe it'd simply be the vanilla sling slotted as a head attachment option for the existing base & reinforced sticks? For all I know, that could make it either very easy or very messy to code. Though, I know Maltiez managed to make musket bayonets that buff melee damage work perfectly in his Firearms pack; this would sort of be that in reverse, a melee weapon gaining a conditional ranged attack with some extra boost to the final projectile damage over a normal sling.

DrLulu Thank you so much!! 😊

Awesome and very vanilla friendly, should be integrated in the game, well done !

Mamotromico check out the new update, the issue with the lantern variant in the off hand has been fixed!

💬 JeanPierre , 2 days ago

TideTurner Thanks for the heads up! It's been fix in the new update!

💬 TideTurner, 3 days ago

Oh btw, the lantern's config file is misspelled, reading from [walkingstick-lantrn] instead of the walkingstick-lantern json file.

💬 JeanPierre , 3 days ago

Mamotromico Thanks for testing it out yourself! Its valueable to have that confirmed as a repeatable issue. It seems like it subtracts from the vanilla +20 hunger rate given to the off hand. Its a priority issue now! I'll try to roll out the update asap!

💬 JeanPierre , 3 days ago

Joulz Hey! I just wanted to give you a heads up that the compatibility issue with snowshoes has been solved! Checkout the the Compatibility/known issues section i left there a quick tutorial how to fix this issue :)

💬 Mamotromico, 3 days ago (modified 3 days ago)

Tested all the variations on a creative save to confirm JeanPierre

It really seems to be just the Lantern variation that is adding +10% instead of -10% hunger, and only in the offhand while Alternative Offhand Penalty is also loaded.
All the other variations seems to be working without issue in the offhand. How curious.

💬 JeanPierre , 3 days ago

Mamotromico Hello!! Oof you dont want more hunger while playing as blackguard for sure, yesss something is up with those variants in the offhand. I'll try to fix it up soon! Thanks for the heads up and the confirmation that the issue is persisting ^^

💬 Mamotromico, 3 days ago (modified 3 days ago)

Hey there!

Kudos on the compatibility with Alternative Offhand Penalty!

Just wanted the confirm that the Lantern stick is indeed adding +10% hunger instead of -10%, rolled back to 1.0.4 meanwhile since I had just made a Lantern and I'm already playing blackguard :')
Maybe it's an issue with previous config files? I'll double check on my server to see if it's something that simple.

EDIT: I checked the config/json files and the modifier is listed correctly there, I'll double check if it is really just the lantern stick, I'll add a new comment if that's not the case.

💬 JeanPierre , 4 days ago

Aasdanac Thanks for checking it out! Sticky situation indeed! I'll note that down for a future update ^^

💬 Aasdanac, 4 days ago (modified 4 days ago)

Hey, really like this mod. I was wondering if you could consider making the bone of the models more aligned towards the center since this happens with Harper's Immersive tools and it's got a similar effect when they're displayed on a tool rack.

💬 JeanPierre , 4 days ago

oneil that would be a very sweet addition! As of right now I'm still a baby modder and it seems like it would require adding new animal behavior which I'm unfamiliar with right now. However if i gain enough confidence I'll revisit the idea!!

💬 JeanPierre , 4 days ago

Vaelkyri Oh thats something new but nope, I left traders untouched and I don’t really plan on adding those as a trader's commodity. Was the stick the only update you have made? I run heavely modded server with a buddy of mine and our survival traders seems okey. Also the off hand, yeah it seems like for some people it works properly and for some does not. In your case it seems that it adds the +20% debuf from vanilla offhand and the stick takes the 10% giving you +10 to hunger, thats unwanted so I'll revisit it in the next update!

💬 oneil, 4 days ago

do you think we could have a shepard stick like the shepard mod where animals follow you ? thanks and great mod !

💬 Vaelkyri, 4 days ago (modified 4 days ago)

Quick check, did you attempt to add walking sticks to Survival traders? They've all vanished on our server after update.

Also lantern variants are adding 10% hunger in off hand not reducing

💬 JeanPierre , 5 days ago (modified 5 days ago)

Endrid hm, i've been testing it out on a brand new save file and works for me, do you mind sharing with me your modlist and your config file data for Alt Offhand penalty mod? Thank you!!

💬 1noden, 5 days ago

I feel like the reinforced walking stick should have a low attack rate, or something.

💬 TideTurner, 5 days ago

JeanPierre Torches do not naturally burn out when only held by a seraph. Though diving into water does extinguish them. Maybe adding resin would be a good way to explain why the walking stick's torch wouldn't go out when diving into water.

💬 1noden, 5 days ago

wait nvm i dont think i read the mod page properly :sob: xd

💬 Endrid, 5 days ago

I am not sure what is going on, but with the newest (v1.0.5) update that is supposed to fix the bug with Alternative Offhand Penalty, putting my Lantern walking stick into my offhand now gives me an increase of 10% hunger (Total rate of 110%) , but if I hold it in my toolbar its normal. I use Alt Offhand penalty to remove all off hand penalties. If I rollback v1.0.4 of Walking stick, I get the proper 90% hunger rate when it's in my offhand. Let me know if I can provide anything to assist in troubleshooting.

💬 JeanPierre , 5 days ago

TideTurner Interesting!!!! I like it, i gotta figure out how to make them stay lit when placed. I'll not that down!

💬 JeanPierre , 5 days ago

ShootEmUpDown thank you for checking it out! I hope the sticks will come in handy! :D

💬 JeanPierre , 5 days ago

1noden the reasoning behind the speedboost is that as you walk with your stick you walk slightly more efficiently, the 5% boost is usually negligible however during testing i found out that it really helps when something is slowing you down. However please adjust your experience to however you see fit, the values are configurable! Check out the config tab up top if you need guidance ^^

💬 TideTurner, 5 days ago

What about making a variant of the crude stick? Attaching a torch to it. Pretty much a lite lantern walking stick.

💬 ShootEmUpDown, 6 days ago

Fantastic mod! Great QoL tool that feels immersive, practical, and balanced. Def cant wait to see the future updates and additions you've got planned!

💬 1noden, 6 days ago

Personally, I think that the walking stick shouldn't apply a speed boost, instead, I think it should allow you to step up 1 block without having to jump.

💬 JeanPierre , 6 days ago (modified 6 days ago)

OhYaRaven Yes indeed, it's already been solved! Check out update 0.3.0 in the salty's immersive lantern mod page ^^

💬 OhYaRaven, 6 days ago

Is there a way this can be more compatible with Salty's Immersive Lanterns? When I attach a lantern to a walking stick, it gets all wonky on a windy day or high mountains. The walking stick will start twirling and whipping all over the place.

💬 JeanPierre , 6 days ago

ProrokFYNTK Thank you for trying it out! ^^ stay tuned for more!

💬 ProrokFYNTK, 6 days ago

JeanPierre Awesome! I crafted a walking stick with a lantern, but now I need to get that lantern back, so I can't wait for the update! Also, great mod! I absolutely love the idea

💬 JeanPierre , 6 days ago

ProrokFYNTK It should not be a problem! I've been thinking about adding this feature in the next update ^^

💬 ProrokFYNTK, 6 days ago

Will it be possible in the future to dismantle the walking sticks? for example by putting the walking stick with lantern in the crafting grid with an axe, and you would get the walking stick back, with a hammer you'd get the lantern (or other item attached on top) back

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 28th at 2:55 AM

Farbott Hopefully yes! It's something i was not able to figure out yet 😄

💬 Farbott, Nov 28th at 1:38 AM

Would it be possible to make the stick light up when its placed against the wall when its a lantern variant? Currently it just goes dark, a damn shame when i need to panic grab my shield for a sudden cave shiver

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 27th at 12:29 PM

Kylocard hmmm, currently the stick has the ability to be placed by the wall (at least two block in height) how ever i like the idea of sort of "sticking" it into the ground. I'll look into it!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 27th at 12:25 PM

RumpleRatskin ohhh this is a very neat idea, I had similar one written down that would basically be a crude walking stick but a sort of early game combat variant. However i like yours much more since its actually based on real life example. While researching it i came across different name of it "Blackthorn walking stick" which i love!. I'm going to add this to the roadmap! I'll mark your name down as a person who suggested it ^^ Thank you for sharing that!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 27th at 12:13 PM (modified Nov 27th at 12:14 PM)

Luku_ne Thank you and happy trails! Could be an idea to add this as an addon in the future!

💬 Kylocard, Nov 27th at 10:03 AM

Please can you add a shortcut key that would let us put the stick on the ground standing up.

This would be so useful for the lantern sticks at night (or any of them really) when you need to do something two handed, would be a really great QOL.

💬 RumpleRatskin, Nov 27th at 9:28 AM

Great idea for a sort-of early variant for combat

CETLIC SHILLELAGH

"A craft often wielded by Celtic chieftains during brawls to deadly effect."

  • Basically just a regular Shillelagh (go no wikpedia r smthing to find out more)
  • Crafted from a specific type of wood
  • Could be combined with different nail types for increase damage at the cost of lowered durability
  • Prob do around 2.5 - 3 damage.
💬 Luku_ne, Nov 26th at 10:15 PM (modified Nov 26th at 10:15 PM)

Heyo, it's just an idea but maybe add those bonuses partially to spears? Spears too can be used somehow as walking sticks. Also, I love this mod❤️

💬 Vari_Ares, Nov 25th at 7:17 PM

Thx you too ! <3

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 25th at 12:56 PM

Venator_ ❤️🙌

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 25th at 11:54 AM (modified Nov 27th at 12:36 PM)

Vari_Ares Briliant!! I like the idea a lot! I'm going to add this to the roadmap! I'll mark your name down as a person who suggested it, thank you!! ^^

💬 Venator_, Nov 25th at 6:15 AM

This needs to be a part of the offical game

💬 Vari_Ares, Nov 25th at 12:49 AM

Okiii ! :3 Also I just had an idea, what about adding a little sound for the stick when walking with it ? Each time the stick hit the ground it will play a sound (but the volume need to be low to now be too anoying and unrealistic), if synchronised with the walking animation it would be amazing, and even more amazing if the sound can change with the type of soils the stick hit ! Also maybe make this sound optional in the config so if people are annoyed they can turn it off ! Thx it would make your mod perfect ! <3

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 24th at 11:48 PM

Vari_Ares Hiya! Happy to hear you like it! Right now the mod is based on the standard first person mode, so the animations work best there. However, thank you for pointing that out. I’ll make a note of it and check it in the future! ^^

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 24th at 11:42 PM

TheOlRazzlDazzl can't wait for the Pathfinder's variant, already working on the 3D model! Thanks for the heads up! I'll try to fix it in the next update :D

💬 Vari_Ares, Nov 24th at 10:08 PM

Hi, I love your mod, I tried it, love the walking animation ! But there is a little visual issue... when in FPS mode, when I walk with a stick and look down to my feets I can't see the entiere 3D model of the Stick, I don't know why it's only half of the stick we can saw, it's a little immersive breaking lol Idk if it can be fixed it's still just a detail ! <3

💬 TheOlRazzlDazzl, Nov 24th at 4:33 PM

JeanPierre Firstly, super excited for the Pathfinder's Walking Stick just for the vibes alone!

Wanted to report a compatibility issue that's oddly similar to the one with the canoe mod: the Spinning Wheel Mod! If you're using the spinning wheel with the walking stick equipped, sometimes you turn invisible. The spinning wheel is technically a vehicle I think, so the core issue is probably the same? Not sure :P

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 24th at 3:35 PM

Joulz I’m glad you enjoy it! Right now I still have no idea what’s causing the issue with the snowshoe mod 😓 I’m gonna keep digging into it, so hopefully something will turn up. As for the screen-space stuff, it’s based on my monitor, which is pretty average, and I went with whatever felt right. In the future I might add a config so people on ultrawide etc. would have the option to tweak it themselves!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 24th at 3:19 PM
💬 Joulz, Nov 24th at 2:47 PM

Hello, we are using this mod in a server and about 4-5 members have mentionned the snowshoe issue (I see you already know). Some players also stopped using the item since they found it takes too much screen space. Especially on ultrawide, it feels like it's in the middle of your screen. I don't know if it's something that you can fix or tweak. Otherwise, our community loves this mod!

💬 Vari_Ares, Nov 24th at 12:48 AM

Again... a mod that SHOULD be in Vanilla ! <3

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 23rd at 6:40 PM (modified Nov 24th at 9:52 AM)

DragonLord42 Hm, I don't think so. Since the sheath model is built around the elk backdrop shape, it only works with the elk for now. Maybe someone will take a crack at it and make an addon though. That'd be great!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 23rd at 6:32 PM (modified Nov 23rd at 7:01 PM)

Endrid I'm so sorry to hear that! I rolled back the update so others wont have to face the same issue. Here are two things that I would do, if you have the backup, backup your files with previous mod release. If you dont:

  1. Downgrade the mod to previous version, see if the effect has returned to normal, if not go here -> https://wiki.vintagestory.at/World_Configuration and set the player hunger rate multiplier to /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 0.83 to kinda offset the permament hunger increase, and wait for the proper update.
  2. Keep the update and do the same here, https://wiki.vintagestory.at/World_Configuration and set the player hunger rate multiplier to /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 0.83 to kinda offset the permament hunger increase. You will need to craft the walking stick with lantern again here.

I'm again very sorry for the inconvenience! I'm very inexperieced with modding as i mentioned in the description so things may be wacky sometimes. 🙏

💬 DragonLord42, Nov 23rd at 5:40 PM

Do you think this mod will become compatible with the Equus: Wild Horses. It would be realy cool to have it attatch to a horse aswell as an elk.

💬 Endrid, Nov 23rd at 5:22 PM

JeanPierre Just tried the new update. It broke my existing lantern walking stick, which I had equipped in off hand, into a weird black item with no effects and my character is now stuck with a permanent 20% hunger increase.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 22nd at 6:19 PM

Sameal I've found the root cause of the issue. I will be rolling out an update soon. Possibly tomorrow! ☺️

💬 Sameal, Nov 22nd at 6:57 AM

JeanPierre SaltyWater funny glitch when also using immersive lanterns it replaces the walking stick with lantern animation with the windy lantern animatin

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 19th at 7:18 PM

xMiddovah Not a problem at all! Thanks for the fix 🙌

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 19th at 7:18 PM

Mamotromico I'm actively collecting compatibility data, so thank you for letting me know about this! I'm learning as I go therefore I can't promise much. What I can promise is that I'll try my best to make it as compatible as possible! 😊

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 19th at 7:11 PM

WarBarista Glad you enjoy it!!! I'm unfamiliar with what Crowdin is but i will definitely look it up! Thanks!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 19th at 7:09 PM

Endrid Noted! Thank you!! 😊

💬 xMiddovah, Nov 19th at 6:55 PM

Hey, it's me again :)  Thank you for includin me in your Contributionlist :)

I was looking over the file and found that i had made two mistakes :/
I missed the "black"-Part in the Blackbronzelantern and the "Tin"-Part in the Tinbronzelantern so here they are. Sry for any possible inconviniences this mistake has caused. I realy love your Mod and can't imagine a playthrough without it :)

Spoiler!

"item-walkingstick-lantern-blackbronze": "Wanderstab mit Schwarzbronzelaterne",

"item-walkingstick-lantern-tinbronze": "Wanderstab mit Bronzelaterne",

💬 Mamotromico, Nov 19th at 5:29 PM

JeanPierre loving the mod, and congrats on the update!

I just wanted to report a funny interaction with https://news.kalataka.ru/altpenalty.

Seems like you added a flat hunger offset to counteract the usual offhand penalty that the game applies (+20% hunger), but since I'm already using the alternative penalty mod, which reduces the penalty to 10% for general items, I end up with a -10% hunger compared to using it on the main hand. If you just add a configuration entry for that it would be more than enough for me!

Thank you!

Made simple walking stick and loving it! Never thought I would need something like this, but even walking around and looking for ruins feels so good with that. By the way, is there a Crowdin page for this mod?

💬 Endrid, Nov 19th at 1:11 AM

Hello! Love the mod! Just wanted to note that with the new update and being able to attach lanterns, SaltyWaters immersive lanterns makes the lantern walking stick wobble around. Pretty sure that is an unexpected interaction.

💬 ZeroAresIV, Nov 19th at 12:36 AM

I feel like this mod also has the adverse effect of giving my Seraph more aura in multiplayer

The stick with lantern attached interact in a funny way with salty's immersive lanterns. my character swings his stick like he's casting a spell. Thank you for the update!

Cherriberri

On my end! Will be fixing it! ^^

💬 Cherriberri, Nov 11th at 6:21 AM

The walking stick is detected as a usable tool handle by Salty's Manual: Tool Crafting! If it's not intended, I think it could only be fixed on SaltyWater's end. Either way, I wanted to give a warning to other users of this fun mod :)

💬 Mamotromico, Nov 11th at 12:44 AM

Would also love what Comrade_Kai suggested to collect things!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 10th at 11:20 PM

Vherkin Thank YOU kindly for your feedback and bend testing the stick, as I'm glad to hear that i did not snap! Round of applause goes to SaltyWater for making sure it runs (and walks 😉) as stickgod intended

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 10th at 11:05 PM

Comrade_Kai Enjoy!! Hm good question! I'm not sure how it could be done, but if i find a solution I'll add it in the upcoming update! (In the meantime, It is possible to pick up stuff from the ground if you switch ur stick to your off-hand) safe travels!

💬 Vherkin, Nov 10th at 7:08 PM

Not only does it work well, but it seems to be compatible with everything i could throw at it.

-Since it is a tool, it does neutral damage in Combat Overhaul. (Anyway, get a Quarter staff if you want a combat staff!) and work well.
-I was able to enchant it with KRPG and got durability 3 on it.
-All animation seems correct and the boost work.
-Need just enough ressources to make it a worthwhile investment but not game breaking.

10/10, will now explore caressing my big stick.

💬 Comrade_Kai, Nov 10th at 4:03 PM

Love this mod! I was wondering if there was any way it could be made so that you can still right click to pick up stones and sticks off of the ground while holding the walking stick in the main hand?

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 8th at 5:27 PM

Lord_Yerial ❤️👀stay tuned

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 7th at 10:29 PM

Mesita Thank you for mentioning that! I'll note that in the description. (I'll try looking into it but I'm just a baby modder so I cannot promise anything yet!)

💬 TheOlRazzlDazzl, Nov 6th at 10:26 PM

You have reached directly into my brain and pulled out something I have been craving desperately for the Vibes thank you you are my hero

💬 Mesita, Nov 6th at 8:12 PM (modified Nov 6th at 8:13 PM)

Really enjoying this mod!

I've had no issues with the mod so far, but I have something to note about compatibility with the snow shoes mod. If you're using both the walking stick and snow shoes at the same it works fine on grass. but the moment you touch snow the game gets framey and stutters.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 6th at 2:16 PM

Izunundara I was surprised that there wasn't a mod like this yet! Have fun!!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 6th at 2:16 PM

CheatCode13 Really?? That's so cool! I started working on it around a month ago with couple failed attempts at learning the 3D moddeling software hahah.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 6th at 2:13 PM

RadialisGrzmot Nice idea!

💬 Velaroz, Nov 5th at 7:16 AM

Crude stick would probably be a pair of sticks and either some vine, or a singular rope, while giving just a 2% speed bonus and 5% hunger reduction.

Reinforced stick could probably be either a log or some planks from sturdier woods, like maple/oak, a plate, fabric, and nails & strips. Any metal tier restriction at your discretion. Bonuses would be about 8~10% & 20~25%?

Lantern attachment could maybe drop the hunger rate reduction by 5~10% [firmly attached, but does change the weight balance], sack drops the movement bonus by 2~3%, as you don't want the sack swinging wildly.

I am personally of the mind that it'd be nice if the reinforced stick could have the lantern attachment, but not the sack—sturdier anchor point for the lantern, but it's too bulky for the sack to tie to securely.

💬 Wingfriend, Nov 5th at 12:33 AM

Question! Has anyone tested this with different player models like the Kobold? I would adore having this mod for any given long walks and would love to have a walking stick for my little guy.

💬 Izunundara, Nov 4th at 11:17 PM

Oh damn this is literally what I have in my modding ideas script almost down to the numbers for balance, great work this one's going on the team save :D

💬 CheatCode13, Nov 4th at 6:46 PM (modified Nov 4th at 6:48 PM)

Hey man, just wanted to say this looks absolutely awesome! I actually made a post on reddit mid last week asking for someone to make exactly this, it's really cool to see that someone has! I'd love to see an addition that lets it have the same effect while in your off hand. Not sure if the post had anything to do with your insperation but if it inspired you to make this then it work, really cannot wait to try it out! :D (scratch the part about wanting it to work in the off hand, seen that you've already done it XD )

💬 RadialisGrzmot, Nov 4th at 6:30 PM

Interesting mod!

Not sure whether this could be considered or not as an addition, but this makes me think of a potential walking stick that doubles as a sheathe for a sword, with the drawback being that unsheathing and sheathing said sword takes a bit of time.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 4th at 1:42 PM (modified Nov 4th at 1:42 PM)

DrunkGeko I actaully was debating myself if i should add that option, personally i enjoy playing without the autostep, but thinking about it now i might add it as an option in the config or as a toggle via the keyboard, thanks!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 4th at 1:35 PM

Velaroz Thanks! Glad u like it! It’s a case of keeping a nice balance between fun and utility. You pretty much nailed the three-tier system as I imagine it right now! crude stick too weak to attach anything, current perfect for attachments, reinforced sturdier with some extra damage and reach, but without the ability to attach things. And of course, I’m trying to avoid biting off more than I can chew, but I think the three tier system is a nice starting point if I decide to go even deeper.

Stick around (hehe) cuz more things are comming!

💬 DrunkGeko, Nov 4th at 10:10 AM

This is very neat but i think it would be even better if it took after the minecraft version of this and gave extra step height (can walk up full blocks as if they were stairs)

I'm really looking for some kind of mod that does that and i think it would fit yours perfectly

💬 Velaroz, Nov 4th at 1:53 AM

Very nice item and like how functional it is.

Would love to see the future variants of the stick, since it seems like the stick itself actually comes in handy as a way to make a hike in armor less strenuous to boot.

Would the reinforced walking stick go up from the +5% speed and -10% hunger?

I'd assume there'd be three tiers, given how things are written, with it going Crude -> Current -> Reinforced.

Attachments would probably only be the Middle tier & up, as crude would be too flimsy to handle the extra weight of a lantern/sack? 🤔

With just the singular stick I am not too keen on using it at this time, but would definitely use it later when the reinforced stick/attachments are added. Very nice concept & theme.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 3rd at 11:37 PM

sebpt Yes indeed!

💬 sebpt, Nov 3rd at 10:12 PM

Cool mod, can the stick be used in both off hand and normal hand?

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 3rd at 6:30 PM

YangWenLi Thanks, enjoy your walks! 😊😊

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 3rd at 6:29 PM

exception_null Joy and a bit of wonder is at the core of this mod, and I'm very glad that I was able to achieve that! Also wow, thanks a lot for the suggestions! Plenty to work with!

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 3rd at 6:27 PM

sputim Thank you!! Appricate your suggestions! ^^

💬 YangWenLi, Nov 3rd at 2:13 AM

This is freaking awesome and I love it from a design perspective

💬 exception_null, Nov 3rd at 1:32 AM

The idea of this mod brings me a lot of joy. I especially love the idea of customization, adds a lot of personality. Can I put a small skull on it like a stereotypical shaman!? Seriously, regardless of what you think of the rest of this, can I have a shaman skull or a druid leaf on my stick please? Witch doctor staff? Pimp or mafioso cane!? Maybe im getting ahead of myself

With that said, perhaps there can be a certain level of self defense you can get from a long, hard stick? I dont really think the mod needs it, since it only takes a number key or scroll wheel to swap to a proper weapon, but would be somewhat thematically fitting and slightly immersive. Throughout history, those skilled in stick combat such as a quarterstaff, or bo staff can potentially fight on even ground with those specializing in other forms of melee weapon. The reach in particular, as you have already added to the mod, is probably the most valuable asset. I have a few ideas that might be able to expand on that.

-One of the non-combat classes may know how to properly use a stick, gaining a meaningful, yet still outclassed by other weapons, damage boost (except crude)

-Perhaps some form of stone, metal, or wood cap can be used as decoration, and transform the walking stick into a proper quarterstaff, reducing the walking buffs a bit, but being usable by any class as a weapon

-Bamboo or some hardwood can be used to make a bo staff that can deal slightly more damage without sacrificing the walking benefits

-A bit of extra knockback to better keep enemies at range

-Sword cane? Maybe only available by trader but has damage similar to a copper or bronze falx by any class? Im less sure how it would work mechanically and im not sure it even fits

-Long staff that is a direct downgrade in every way, slower, walking, damage, but has much greater reach and knockback, might even be useful to someone that isnt trained to use a big  stick

-Could be able to do a very minor block akin to the crude shield

-I dont think any of these combat oriented variants except maybe the bo staff should be able to attach a lantern or linen, as lanterns and thin cloth bags usually dont like being used as a flail to hit mechanical abominations

💬 sputim, Nov 2nd at 10:38 PM (modified Nov 2nd at 10:44 PM)

JeanPierre Beautiful mod!

A proposal: You were talking about a early game version with low material costs. Instead of giving the "primitive" version worse benefits, it should get the ones that the walking stick has right now; they are nicely balanced and not too strong, nor too weak but very useful in the early days of a playthrough. The advanced version (the one we have right now) should give you +1 step height as an additional bonus to make the walks through the world a tad bit comfier! (Obviously only while walking.)

It would be an immersive way of adding +1 step height to the game without being cheaty. Additionally you can just not equip your walking stick if you don't want to step over everything while chilling or working in your base.

Love the plans about customization as well, great job!

💬 Hydromancerx, Nov 2nd at 6:25 PM (modified Nov 2nd at 6:30 PM)

Yay! I am happy you will be adding lanterns down the road. Another idea i had is to be able to add "pins" to the walking stick. Anything that can be slotted into the "pin" slot of a characters inventory basiclly. For example a butteryfly pin from the base game.

EDIT: Also being able to change the color of the cloth of the staff would be cool too with colored cloth. And of course the type of wood the staff is made of.

💬 JeanPierre , Nov 2nd at 2:33 PM

Thanks!! Yes! I'm planning of adding a roadmap which would include couple more variant's of the stick ^^ stay tuned!

💬 HeadPilgrim, Nov 2nd at 5:47 AM

WatermelonFrogy

I second this! Honestly in my opinion you should try to lean into the whole personal customization if you want try and add features to this mod. Either with different attachements or a way to combine several variations of carved wood think maybe totemesque designs in order to really make your walking staff unique!

💬 WatermelonFrogy, Nov 2nd at 5:05 AM

Would be cool to be able to decorate these with the gems! Would make them easier to brag about xD

Running up next to someone with my walking stick with an emerald gem on the top

💬 Nephelangelo, Nov 2nd at 4:14 AM

Why am I compelled to download this, it's just a stick. But I need it. :D

💬 EduardoTV, Nov 2nd at 3:44 AM

Great mod. I wanted to add a ciupaga (polish shepherds cane ax) that would give the same effect but also act as a defense tool and general axe.

💬 Hydromancerx, Nov 2nd at 3:19 AM

This is so cool! Could you make one that has a lantern attached to it?
Thanks
