Simply put, the rate of loss from alcohol distilling is bad because of some code-jank from how the game does distilling. This mod seeks to put it at a slightly better ratio.

Ale and mead now distills to twice as much whiskey, sake or distilled mead, at a 10 to 1 ratio

Ciders and wines now distill to 3 times as much brandy, at a 3-1 ratio

I hope

So why these numbers and not the most realistic ratios? Well the answer to that lies in the code of how a damned distillery works. Because it outputs 0.01L of alcohol as quickly as possible, with a max rate of 0.01 per second, any ratio that isn't able to be expressed as "1 over X" (1/3rd, 1/2, 1/10th) doesn't produce that amount, but instead the closest valid 1/X fraction.

Until this is changed, or I get over my paralysing fear of learning how to code, I am unable to get better ratios than this, but it is still a marked improvement!

So. I've been thinking.
That's never a good sign to be honest. I know where I'd like to take this mod but I don't know if I have the strength to do it.

I would like to completely redo the beer and whiskey processes, on top of the current changes I've made. I have the stages written out, but it'd involve learning how to add recipes for barrel crafting, drying, baking or beehive kilning, quern grinding, mealmaking, and distilling. At least one of the items produced would need to be ground storable, preferrably in piles. I'd then need learn how to add a new crop for hops that acts like a cross between berry bushes and wild vines. After that, I'd need to learn how to add 2 new blocks, a cauldron to replace mealmaking with boiling so there's a mass crafting option available, and a pot still with a 100L capacity to be an upgrade to the current column still that is in the game.

This is ultimately a daunting task for someone who historically sucks at code, maths, and abstract concepts. I genuinely believe I am not capable of it. But if I don't burn out on this game, or if I return to it after a break that's what I'd like to do.

Once I'm back from my break from this game (and I don't have leatherwork commissions I'm behind on, and I don't have a bunch of technical issues with my stream to sort out and the charity stream is over and so on and so forth etc etc) I'll be working with a friend to learn the model maker. Ironically if I buy a friend the game he's been so incensed by the game's systems he's vowed to put his entire game dev experience into making an overhaul pack, and wants to include the basic changes my mods make to add to that XD

I'll keep those mods in mind though, thank you for identifying those. I had my brain percolating where I'd find recipe examples and had only thought of expanded foods for that!

I'm taking a quick break from the game at the moment, having just hit the damn parkour segment of the main quest, and I'm too mad at it to play or mod right now. The biggest issues I'm facing with developing the mod in the direction I want is that I need to actually make the items. I can provide the item chain I was going to go with if that would help you?

Hi! I'm a beginner modder, and I'm just about to start working on developing and implementing a full-fledged brewing mechanic in the game. I have a basic understanding of how the process works in real life. My main focus is on immersion and realism. If there's any way we can help each other with this, I'd be glad to get involved!

Christ, I don't think I've ever related to the post script of a mod so hard before XD

I'm very slowly learning how to mod in VS due to being a moderator on a server and also am avoiding coding like the plague. To me a lot of your idea sounds fairly feasible with .json work.

From experience recipes aren't actually too horrible, I've been able to (mostly) successfully create recipes that involve combustion properties, grinding, and barrel crafting and once you look through vanilla recipes as examples it becomes pretty straight-forward cut/paste and changing names with a few ventures of having to do something unique.

The VS model maker can be.... a learning curve, I won't lie. But the tutorials are pretty solid and with enough dinking around to get the muscle memory in place it gets easier.

Mods I would look at for examples, resources, and learning material are:
- A Culinary Artillery for the cauldron

Expanded Foods for mealmaking, barrel crafting, and baking
- Lavosier for the pot still and distilling recipes - it has awesome examples for specifically doing liquid levels in an open container if you decide for the showy option, as well as the more 'hidden' processes in a closed system
Herbarium for your hops plant, as well as possibly Real Grapes

- Any of the various ground storable/piles mods, you may even be able to ask the authors for an assist with your item

To be honest, I find .json work to be far more similar to learning how to outline and cite in an english class rather than math, if that's reassuring at all.

SironaGold Sounds like a cool idea to me. You've got this :)

Probably Expanded Food.

I do not know which mod is adding this feature to your game, but I do not have it. I cannot produce anything stronger than stage 1 alcohol in barrels. I cannot find any reference to doing so in the .json files for barrels or booze. Anything stronger than Ales, Wines, or Mead has to be produced in a boiler in vanilla.

💬 Aloy, Apr 15th at 12:55 AM

SironaGold you can make wine and aqua vitae w/ barrels and the exchange rates are like,,, disgustingly unrealistic in vanilla lmao

💬 SironaGold , Apr 14th at 11:25 PM

Aloy

Huh. I never thought to look into the exchange rate on the brewing process, it seems it only really affects ale and mead?

I might look at it in the coming week, I don't think that's really as much of an issue as the loss from distilling. For now, I reccomend using a fruit press and berry bushes, they produce an equal amount of wine as fruit juice, so you get your full 50L

💬 Aloy, Apr 14th at 8:54 PM

SironaGold you can make alcohol with barrels as well, albeit with a horrible exchange rate

💬 SironaGold , Apr 14th at 6:00 PM

Aloy

Barrels? huh?

All it does is make the distillery produce slightly more product than before...

💬 Aloy, Apr 14th at 4:20 PM

Literally was waiting for a mod like this before getting back into VS. does it work w/ barrels too?
