Rustwall - Overhaul mod for Vintage Story
Synopsis
Rustwall is an overhaul mod designed for use on the MudRustwall server.
This does not mean you are forbidden from using it on any other server, but it is incomplete and may cause catastrophic damage to your save when updated or added to an existing world.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
Conceptually, the goal is to provide some balance between the two different types of Vintage Story server:
- Perpetual, never wiping
- These servers are characterized by never wiping their maps, always keeping the same world. These worlds suffer from a lack of new content and player burnout as players complete all of their goals and have no reason to continue playing.
- Seasonal, regular wipes
- These servers are notable for regularly deleting the world and starting fresh, or perhaps carrying forward some amount of items.
Rustwall bridges the gap by providing both experiences side-by-side, with the following features:
- There is a safe zone at the center of the map, 1km x 1km in size. This area never wipes, and houses special machinery.
- Expanding outward from the safe zone are 'rings' of various different world gen settings that are randomized.
- On a regular basis these rings regenerate, randomizing themselves completely. Players can maintain a set of machines inside the safe zone that prevent some or all rings from regenerating based on the state of repair the machines are in, they wear out overtime so players need to keep them up or risk losing everything outside the safe zone.
- Administrators can add and remove these machines to balance regeneration as the amount of the map regenerated each cycle is based on a percentage of machines that are still repaired.
A good balance is intended to be one where a small group of players can manage to keep the machines repaired in such a way that at good portion of the world remains unchanged for sustained periods of time, while a concerted server effort can keep them almost fully repaired, only ever having to worry about regeneration in the farthest reaches where only the pioneers dare roam.
We've got a lot of ideas for different features, so while the base ideas will stay, there may be crazy new additions made to the formula as well.
-To be continued...

Velaroz That's actually what we're aiming for. In the server, there's a custom floating island that is to act as an "ark" of sorts, where players are free to build bases and maintain the machinery that keeps the world stable. There are many other changes and parts of the game that will be touched with this mod once it's done, but if it sounds cool you can check out the server once it's fully operational (date TBD).
Michaloid I thought that meant more like "this mod is server-side only", not so much "this mod is for one particular server". Sorry for the mix-up, this is fixed.
Please switch this mod to the Server Tweaks category.
On a conceptual level, this actually sounds very interesting/awesome as something for a whole world setting. Where large parts of the world are basically caught in Temporal fluctuations so severe that, if they aren't kept stable/anchored, those regions shift and change as worlds bleed across each other, the old fading from memory as the new asserts itself.
