Metal Tongs

Overview

Adds metal tongs to the game which function exactly the same as wooden tongs; increase cool factor of your forge area.

Also makes all heat resistant gear consume durability on pickup, or on selecting the slot, of hot items.

Quick-start Guide

  • Create metal tong arms via smithing, and combine with the appropriate type of nails and strips to create metal tongs.

Config Settings (VintageStoryData/ModConfig/MetalTongs.json)

  • TongsUsageConsumesDurability: Whether or not all heat resistant gear, vanilla and modded, consume durability on use; defaults to true.

Known issues

  • There are placement issues with ingots and plates with these modded tongs. These will not be adjusted at the moment to prevent breaking vanilla tongs (which have a slightly different problem).

Could leather be a required crafting ingredient (and leather handles added to the model). To make it worth the extra crafting ingredient, allow these tongs to pick up any cast item from its mold as long as it's cooled enough to be solid (instead of stick tongs 200 degree limit) That way cast ingots can be directly forged instead of requiring reheat.

Works on 1.21.0 (stable) with the exception that the models are no longer positioned correctly in my hands when holding hot objects.

If you know how to change that in the JSON files, and with .tfedit, you can fix that in your own copy of the files.

UselessAqua - Wouldn't good thermal conductivity make them worse for moving hot objects? That means they transfer heat quickly, if I'm correct?  Not a winning prospect in a tool meant for handling hot metal.

Not only the gloves, but metal tongs themselfs have the same problem.

The mod has copper tongs! Copper is one of the best metal when it comes to good thermal conductivity.

when i hold copper ingots it bugs out a bit im useing the 1.2.3 version of the mod and im on 1.20.4 vintage. the ingot is floting in the air

and some othere stuff to when its heated

Wait so, what does it actually do different? Is it just wooden tongs but has durability?

The gloves mod makes me twitch... You do *NOT* handle hot metal with gloves, you're basically turning those leather gloves into an oven that will cook your hands.  Bad juju.

This is a vanilla issue. Originally, wooden tongs were animated to hold crucibles properly but some other heated items did not look correct. There was a recent change to get hot metal items looking correct in the game, but now crucibles look funky when held. This mod's tongs will look proper when holding a crucible, but the aforementioned issue in vanilla will cause hot items to look wrong. I am waiting to see how VS changes items first before trying to lock into either animation setting.

Sure, just launch the game with the new version and check your ModConfig directory for MetalTongs.json; you should be able to set TongsUsageConsumesDurability to false.

Hey, I'm still playing on version 1.1.0 and before I update I want to ask a question - is there a config where I can completely remove the durability of the tongs? I quite like them just acting like cosmetic versions of the primitive tongs

Fixed now with version 1.1.2.

It appears this is incompatible with No Heat Resistant Inventory, as it just breaks the tongs as soon as you pick up a crucible

They do if you use this mod. From the latest change log: "Patch vanilla tongs to have durability of 125"

You can turn durability usage off if you want to, but why else upgrade to better tongs?

I could see these having utility beyond holding hot items, perhaps a very slight reach and/or item magnetization range bonus while in off hand based on the tier of the item?

May we have the option of defining a base time for wooden tongs to expire due to wear from use over time, and assign a multiplier for different tool tiers based on that? Otherwise from a functional perspective, these are only aesthetic.

Hey, thanks for the mod.

I've ran into an issue though: there seems to be no smithing recipe for iron tong arms. Only iron, cause there is one for arms from other metals. Perhaps it's an issue with my set of mods, but I thought I'd mention it here anyway.
