Disappointed to discover that bell peppers are in the game but can't be planted or grown? Do you use Expanded Food and have always wanted to make stuffed peppers?
Sure there are other mods out there that add their own bell pepper crop in but they come with other crops or mechanics that you don't want. But that all changes with this mod because it does what it says on the tin: adds Just The Pepper!
How to get seeds
Bell pepper plants spawn in the world like regular crops but they don't drop seeds when broken. Instead you need to break them when they are matured (stage 15) or immature (stage 14) to get the bell pepper fruit. Then you can extract a seed by putting the bell pepper in your crafting grid. Plants that died from the heat/cold will still drop a seed though.
If Expanded Foods is installed, seeds are instead a byproduct of the chopped bell pepper recipe. Because you're cutting the bell pepper up, of course you'd get the seeds.
Alternatively, bell pepper seeds can be found in cracked seed vessels, bought from agriculture traders, or looted from ruins.
Crop Info
| Nutrient |
Growth Stages | Growing Temperature | Growing Time | Harvest Drops | World Generation |
| P | 15 | 8-34 | 1.65 months (15 days on 9-day months) |
Stage 14: 1-2 |
Min Temp: 8 |
Why use P instead of N for the nutrient?
I know that the wiki lists N as the nutrient for bell peppers but hear me out. I took to Google to find out what nutrients bell peppers need (because I have zero gardening skill IRL) and most sources say that they need a balance of N, P, and K. But in VS, you can only have one nutrient at the moment. I did discover that too much N leads to the plant growing less fruit and more leaves and P is important to growing the reproductive parts like fruits and seeds, which is what we want to harvest anyways. Besides, N has the most types of crops while P has the lowest. So that's my reasoning behind the decision.
TL;DR - IRL Bell peppers need a balance of nutrients but too much N is bad for more fruit on the plant and P is better. Also, P has the smallest amount of crops and N has the largest.
Compatibility
The crops drop vanilla bell peppers when broken so those should be compatible with any mod that uses them. But I also added compatibility patches for:
- CAN Crops - Bell peppers can be grown on CAN Crops farmland. I'm not very familiar with the mod so some values (such as related to clipping) may be off.
- Expanded Foods (and the unofficial 1.21 patch) - This already uses vanilla bell peppers but I added the ability to press the seeds into seed oil. Also, seeds now are a byproduct of the chopped bell pepper recipe instead of a recipe on their own.
- Food Shelves - Seeds use the proper icons inside seed bins.
- Primitive Survival - Seeds can be found in tree hollows.
- Wild Farming Revival - The seeds can be panned from muddy gravel if that config option is enabled.
- Xskills (and the unofficial 1.21 patch)- Harvesting fully grown bell pepper crops gives you Farming XP.
What about Art of Growing?
In my opinion, Art of Growing is going for realism which I feel like this mod already does. Seeds are found in the bell pepper fruit so you have to decide if you want more seeds or more fruit. So I feel like it should already fit alongside Art of Growing but I'm open to other opinions.
Known Issues
- Wildcraft: Tule and Sedge FIX messes with vanilla bell peppers and causes some strange results. I reported the issue to the mod dev in their comments.
- Wildcraft: Fruits and Nuts (specifically version 1.4.3 for VS 1.21) removes vanilla bell peppers and implements its own version. I don't agree with the removal of vanilla assets but it is what it is.
- On the full-colour map, bell pepper plants show up as white or white-ish (especially when they're younger). I don't know why this is so if anyone has any ideas as to the cause, please let me know.
Possible future plans (maybe)
- Zippy's Crop Tweaks - This is partially done, I just need to figure out how to make the model for the loose seeds. Zippy reached out to me and said he could easily add support to his mod so just waiting for him to do that!
- Art of Growing: Breeding Addon - This would involve messing around with new models and I don't really have any experience with that yet so it would be a whole endeavor. If someone wants to make the models though, I'd be happy to do the code part.

Ah, yea that would be it, shame on me for not reading the notes close enough.
MystRunner JustaKobold Are you using the latest version of Wildcraft: Fruits and Nuts? It removes the vanilla bell pepper and replaces it with its own version. I also added a note about it under Known Issues.
I didnt get the black item but when i harvested mine it just vanished with no produce left behind
I've noticed with the mod that when peppers are planted they grow just fine. But the moment you harvest them your harvest of peppers is unuseable. You essentially get a black item missing type square. I don't know what could be causing this on my end I'm running about 170 mods at the moment.
Faeldray Sure, that's a reasonable explanation!
The_Revisionist Yeah they are still available in creative mode (not survival), but they're not plantable and don't do anything. I feel like I shouldn't go removing vanilla features without good reason, in case it accidentally messes things up (like how the Tule and Sedge Fix mod removed vanilla bell peppers and messed this mod up). So I think for the moment, I'll leave them be. :)
The vanilla pepper seeds are still in the game (available in creative mode at least). Should they be removed?
I unfortunately can't give any insight. I just gave my best guess, given that the 'missing item' identifier is a white box. It's nothing important, but wanted to let you know either way! I just know not everyone runs with the color accurate map!
DigitalHare I see what you mean but I don't know how to fix it. The crop block itself is new but I'm loading vanilla textures onto it. And while the shape blocks for the crops are non-vanilla, all I did was import the vanilla ones into the model creator, added the ability to sway in the wind, and then saved those. I even copied over the "mapcolor": { "base": "game:block/plant/crop/bellpepper/foliage15" } from the vanilla crop block. And the more grown plants do render a correct map color but I don't understand why that difference is there.
All bells are bad in Vintage Story, you are tampering with powers you don't understand!
Do the seeds from this grow a unique entity? If so, they show up as white on accurate color maps. If I had to venture a guess, some graphic is missing and on the overhead render, it's got the white ? block.
I still plan to add the support for AoG: Breeding to 1.20, I just wanted to get a working update out for 1.21 first. After that addition though, I plan to stop support for 1.20 unless there's a bug that needs fixing.
ChimMAG Thanks! I added them to the latest releases

sometimes... sometimes I'm stupid...
LeuxSeveN You might find that info in the section titled "How to get seeds" ;)
so how do I get seeds???
Wonderful. :3 Of all the things that annoyed me about the game, it's gotta be the broken bell pepper. Thank you. ^_^
BraniyaKz I've downloaded them, thanks! I love how squat the smaller ones are lol. I'll work on getting them added and will give you credit for the models :)
Faeldray here it is: Link to Google Drive
BraniyaKz Thanks! I have the source on Github (linked in the tabs at the top of this page) if you wanted to do a pull request with the new models. If you don't know how that works, you could put them on Google Drive or Dropbox or something similar and post the link here.
I read your comment about the aog breeding addon, and i whipped up some quick models using model creator. How can i send them to you?
AnniPicto The invisible meal texture is also a bug in 1.20 so I went ahead and fixed it for that version. I've also released a version of the mod that's specifically for 1.21 that lets you store the seeds on the floor (it also has the invisible meal texture fix). I didn't really do much other testing in 1.21 so let me know if you run into any more issues.
AnniPicto This mod doesn't change bell pepper fruits themselves so the invisible food texture is a vanilla issue 😅 I'll see if I can figure out how to fix it though, as well as being able to place the seeds on the floor
1.21.0-pre.3 still works.
Cooked food has an invisible texture. The pot will look empty if you cook a stew with only peppers. In the new version of the game, seeds can be placed on the floor. The same way as plates. Seeds obtained with this mod cannot be placed on the floor.
Otherwise, everything works as it should.
Faeldray the crops looks pretty good now!
Faeldray I do, I disabled it and that fixed my problem
NotSoRants Hmm, my mod just uses vanilla bell peppers and doesn't modify them at all so there's definitely another mod interfering with them. You don't use "Tule and Sedge Fix", do you?
i am finding my bell peppers dropping as black squares and the game thinks they're a tool/weapon... any idea what could be causing this? The only other mod I think could be possibly causing this is item rarity
Ototinho Bell pepper plants are now affected by wind! Took me a while to figure out, especially with the grown bell peppers hanging on the plant, but I think it looks pretty good.
Ototinho I noticed that in my playthrough as well. I'm using the vanilla shape files and my guess is it's a setting in there. But I'm not very familiar with how shape files work yet so I'll need to poke around and see if I can change that.
Faeldray I notice another thing, the crop don't swing even a little in the wind. not sure if it's possible for you to tweak it or not, it's just a visual thing anyways.
Faeldray it may be Wildcraft or CAN then, not sure (sorry 😵💫)
Ototinho I think the seed bags must be modified by another mod you have because when I have just my mod active and no others, the seed bags match.
Faeldray I was actually talking about the seed bag item itself. I mean, one if these is not like the other. The pepper packet is looking left while the other ones are loking right. can you see how the bell pepper icon is under shadow? (and yeah, the seed bin mirrors all crop icons for some reason XD)
Ototinho The latest release fixes the icon on the seed bins. As for the "looking left instead of right", you're referring to the pepper icon on the seed bag right? If so, I do see what you mean. However I literally copied the icon that's in the base game and that's what it looks like, I can only assume they did that for a reason😅 So I'm going to leave it as is and hopefully it doesn't bother people too much (although in the testing process I noticed that Food Shelves mirrors ALL of the seed icons and now I can't unsee it)
Ototinho Thanks for letting me know! I'll see what I can do about that
Faeldray thanks! it's working fine with CAN now! Another two minor things tho, there's no pepper icon when using the seed bins from Food Shelves and the seed sack itself is looking left instead of right like the other seeds (idk if this is intentional or not, sorry if it is)
CKitt I'm glad you're all enjoying it! That's pretty much why I made it too, because my boyfriend and I were sad that we couldn't make stuffed peppers lol
Well, I absolutely love it! A group of us have been enjoying this on my server, after years of wistfully looking at the EF stuffed peppers in the handbook.
CKitt I got the idea from Zippy's Crop Tweaks 😁
"If Expanded Foods is present, seeds are extracted through the chopped peppers recipe instead"
😍
Ototinho The latest release has compat with CAN Crops. At least I can plant/grow the peppers on CAN Crops farmland when I tested. I couldn't really find info on some of the properties CAN Crops adds so I just copied what they had for the bell peppers from the Farm Crops mod. Let me know if anything seems off.
Ototinho I can see about adding compatibility. I'm not familiar with it but I'll try my best
This mod doesn't seem to work with CAN crops farmland, so i can't plant it 😭
Faeldray Thank you for letting me know. I've taken down the modpack from gdrive. And thank you for taking the time and effort to find out what caused the issue
Enigmayster I narrowed it down to being a conflict between the Tule and Sedge Fix and Expanded Foods. Basically they both try to modify the same section of code (that mention of bellpepper in better_transforms.json) and it causes the bell pepper to error out (to the point where I even got a crash). I reported the issue on the Tule and Sedge Fix page, hopefully the dev can get it fixed soon. If you want a temporary fix, just remove this section in better_transforms.json:
{
"op": "replace",
"path": "/variantgroups",
"value": [{ code: "type", states: ["carrot", "cabbage", "onion", "turnip", "parsnip", "cookedcattailroot", "pumpkin", "cassava", "bellpepper", "olive" ] }],
"file": "game:itemtypes/food/vegetable.json"
},
Enigmayster Thanks, I'll try to take a look at it this week. You're on the right track for troubleshooting, I just use the "half" method. Basically when I'm troubleshooting, I disable half the mod list (taking mod dependencies into account) and then see if the issue is still there. If it is, the problem is in the enabled half. If not, then it's in the disabled half. Then I take the problematic half and disable half of those, and so on. It's still tedious but chances are you'll find the problem mod a little faster. Also, if you're enabling/disabling mods inside the game, it would probably be a lot faster to just move the mods you want to disable out of the mod folder into a temp folder on your desktop or wherever.
Faeldray Yeah I checked the code previously and saw only a mention of bellpepper in better_transforms.json file, but that doesn't remove it from the game... I only discovered what I mentioned earlier (It causes a problem in a whole modlist, but not when enabled only besides your mod) and tbh I was fed up after over an hour of enabling mods in batches of 10, restarting the game etc until I found what is the reason why it's not working that I just gave up on tule fix. I'm not a modder so maybe there is a better way of troubleshooting such problems that I don't know of.
I packed my entire modlist into the zip file and uploaded it to my gdrive: Modpack
It might not be worth the hassle, but If you need anything else from me let me know
Enigmayster Oh that's strange. I actually looked at the code for Tule and Sedge Fix and it doesn't modify bell peppers at all so I don't know why disabling that would fix the issue. If you want to give me your mod list (or the problem mods you've narrowed it down to), I can try to figure out what's happening and possibly patch it.
Running this mod on my modlist and I couldn't see bell pepper in the handbook. I spawned a fully grown plant and it didnt dropped any when I tried to harvest it. I tried to find the root cause of the problem by disabling / enabling mods and testing in creative and so far i found out that running this mod with Wildcraft: Tule and Sedge FIX and a bunch of other mods will remove bell pepper from the game, but running ONLY this mod and tule fix is not causing the problem. I have almost 150mods modlist, so I assume it's the combination of mods that causes it. Removing just the tule fix from my modlist is enough to not cause the problem with peppers being unobtainable.
TL:DR if you have a ton of mods, and one of them happens to be tule fix and you can't see / obtain peppers - disable tule fix and your problem will (most likely) be solved
Thank you! This is going right in my new playthrough.
Finally, a mod that adds just the actually vanilla Bell Peppers. No other compatibility needed for EF. Thanks for your work!
Endurance That would be awesome! And no rush on it :)
Yooo This is cool! Ima look into doing some modeling maybe for AOG compatibility. But I will have to do it next week.
