Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.21.1, potentially outdated):
Floating Landmasses 1.21.1.zip
1-click install
Updated Recently By:
- JonR (1.21.1+)
Adds in huge floating islands that rarely spawn ingame! These islands can have many things atop of them ranging from forests to entire ice sheets. They spawn very infrequently between eachother (around 2k blocks or so), but their spawn rates can be adjusted in the mod's folder! Simply extract the files, open up the landmasses.json folder and edit the "floating islands" landmass' weight!
This is my first mod! If there are any problems, let me know! I've had the game crash once or twice while generating a world; unsure of how to fix that. If anyone has any idea how to, please let me knew. Thanks in advance!

Redoing the name of the folder since the mod isn't 1.16.4 exclusive and I had forgotten to update that for a while now lol.

I just realized the download has been broken for quite some time now; it should be fixed. Sorry about that.

Set the weight to be way too high; should be much rarer to find floating islands now.

it's cool! but uh, i've never noticed a forest or other biome up one of them... except for snow? like, it's always snowy biome on top of these for me
Partexedd I have no idea how to do that, as the mod currently runs as a patch that adds this landmass amongst all the other ones. You may use it however you like, though, but it would probably require a lot of rebalancing and work given the game intends for you to go underground to find ores and whatnot. Remove the underground and you're not left with a lot.
could we get a way to generate worlds with only floating islands and void below them?
Has anyone run this on 1.20 specifically? Did it work well? It says the latest version is for 1.21 so I'm wary to try it.
JonR
I found the funky dungeon situation lol
Whelp, you'll be the first follow.
GhostPower From what I know about the world generation and everything, the short of it is that it was designed to create a (relatively) solid landmass, so completely separate floating islands like this are actually kinda unintended but possible :P There's even a pass that tries to remove small enough floating bits, but that's why it might have funky situations like a dungeon intersecting with it. And yeah unfortunately the whole reason the island ends up on the water itself is due to how the game handles oceans and generating them, it has to do with Oceanicity pulling the terrain downwards, and that's what creates oceans.
Currently running BetterRuins, Rivergen, Conquest Landform Overhaul, Th3Dillis Dungeons and Dungeon Entrances, BetterTraders, and FarSeer all on 1.21.1 it seems to be working surprisingly well..? No issues I've noticed so far at least on SP outside of the bottom of a floating landmass being the bottom of a dungeon instead. But it was actually cool. Landmasses will still generate ontop of water in ocean areas, but at least in my opinion they look quite fine as just floating islands. But I know the purpose is to have them in the sky. If it gets fixed, it'd still be cool to have a sperate mod for floating islands! But I don't expect it to get fixed so I'm happy personally with it as it is.
Just wanted to give others an idea of what worldgen affecting mods it works with. Nothing seemed broken, but if I find something I'll be sure to bring it up.
LeuxSeveN Done thanks to JonR
1.20?
I get what Foxy_Grandpa said back in March 2024, but I really hope this mod comes back to 1.20, either here or picked up by someone else. I loved running with it and felt it really added a nice touch of otherness to the worlds.
So I'm about to start playing around with this again. However, I did set up a game about 4 months ago, and this was causing BetterRuins to not spawn any structures. When this was removed; the structures reappeared. This hasn't been tested on the latest mod patches, yet. But I thought it worth mentioning.
Whatever happens, I'll have an update for this thread. I LOVE this mod. But if it's between BetterRuins and Floating Landmasses, BR wins every time.
Alright so here's the gist; it's been like 3 years and life stuff has happened.
I haven't updated the mod since it seems to work well with current versions save for the oceans issue.
If anyone could figure out how to fix this, I'd be extremely grateful.
Thanks in advance, and I apologize if this isn't the answer y'all were looking for.
You can create сompatibility with Fields and Plateaus?
can you add source link?
Unforutnately I haven't been able to figure out a workaround for above-ocean problem. Sorry for the late response, but it's been a while and with how landmasses are configured, it's impossible to really cut out the middle portion of the landmass itself. If someone could prove me wrong, I'd happily change it. Ikirou
The way I like to think of these is that the islands are floating due to bing out of sync with the rest of the world, possibly due to particuallry bad temporal storms or a massive battle of eldritch horrors long forgotten. Or some bored wizard magicked the fuzz out of that shiz.
U think u find a workaround for isles who are above ocean tend to "fall out of the sky" ?
The parts with ground below are high and then go straight down where ocean is.
Typically because of their elevation they are snow and ice covered Blackfox229
Are all the islands snow and ice covered?
@Tiggy
Unfortunately, due to how worldgen works, Floating Islands tend to rip dungeons out of the ground, especially since there's no ground below them (it's a huge lake). I have no idea how to fix this tbh.
For me in 1.17.9 i often see about 4 floating blocks in a square pattern above a large lake where a floating island would be above. But no such island has yet to spawn for me. Possibly a conflict with Dungeons and Shafts?
on the latest version as of writing and testing, 1.17 rc3 the water underneath the islands appear very glitched, its kinda hard to describe, it LOOKS like huge chunks of water are just missing
EDIT: recent updates to the game has fixed this issue completely, it works as intended now.
Tested this on 1.17.0; seems to work. If this isn't the case, though, please let me know.
With the current worldgen modifications that I can do from a json, that's basically impossible to do especially given that certain inputs for negative values result in the entire world being unable to even generate or crashing mid-generation.
how hard might it be, to change this, to have the islands floating over nothing/layer of mantle at bottom of world? or tweat it in the json, if thats doable?
pretty much im interested if this mod, could be adjusted or if i split off could be created of floating islands (spawn would have to always gen one =p) but then they could be lower down. idk i see this and think like skylands xD
Updated so it's no longer broken upon installation.
Reduced spawning rate by a lot (12 -> 2) since it peppered world gen with floating islands.
Can always be changed as per instructions above.
Updated file to also be usable for 1.16.3
@SirG
I didn't catch the original question since I was prepping for college; could you run the question by again?
I'm unsure; given this was my first mod I realized landforms and landmasses were far more complicated if I wanted to get into adjusting climate or anything like that.
Things like climate and sea-level seem to all correlate to global values such as altitude. I could try searching more into it, but I'm quite busy with college and whatnot.
There is a Viintage Story modding server called VS Works that may be able to give more insight; I'll throw you the invite if you ask for it.
I deleted my previous comment. We were incorrect it was not your plugin.
Question though. What if we want it to behave the same as ground level is there a way to do that? We thought the climate map option that you had set to false was suppose to do that but it's not.
The process was actually streamlined, so nevermind. Just updated it now lol.
I'm waiting until the next major update to push a new version. Main reason is because I'm also kinda busy atm; sure updating may take only a small amount of time, but I want to make sure it's updated on a major version, and then start updating it from then on.
this mod is getting update to 1.15.7, right?
