Are you tired of floating around on a makeshift raft? Are you still waiting for your flax field to grow? Or do you just not feel like building a huge sailboat just to get across a lake? This mod adds a sporty birchbark canoe that's perfect for your early-mid game transport or exploration needs. No need to use those awful crude oars anymore either, this mod adds craftable woodtyped carved oars that you can use to row around in style.
The canoe can carry up to 4 players or 1 player, 2 reed baskets, and a clay vessel or chest. It also has a rack on the side to store your carved oar. The birchbark canoe has the same travel speed as the sailboat and the raft. The birchbark canoe can be picked up and portaged in an empty bag slot.
The carved oar can be used with the vanilla raft if you're so inclined, and the crude oar can likewise be used with the birchbark canoe. The crude oar cannot, however, be stored in the bark canoe.

Crafting
Canoe
Crafting a birchbark canoe is simple. Just combine 6 logs of any type you like, 10 birch logs, 4 portions of pitch glue, 4 coils of rope, and an axe in the crafting grid. 10 durability will be taken off of the axe and you'll have a shiny new canoe!
Carved Oar
The carved oar is crafted almost exactly like the crude oar, requiring 2 units of rope and 2 logs of any type, and a knife with at least 4 durability.

- add a few different types of small watercraft, kayaks, umiaks, coracles, sampans, etc.
- tweak and tune the rowing animations
- transition from a content to a code mod, allowing use of the game's shipbuilding system and control over a bunch of hardcoded stuff like boat speed
- add some more customization options like decals and decorations
- add a slightly faster (and quite expensive) small endgame watercraft

Small request, I'd love to have some kind of rack to put this on when not in use. Rather than just leaving it on the ground or in the water all the time. Especially with the river mod because the current can and will push it downstream (which is a really cool interaction).
Nugut I face a similar issue, im not sure if it was a recent change in the way glue handles or if some mod compatibility thing
Maybe dumb question but how do i place the glue in the grafting grid? I tried everything i can think of have it in a jug but can't like place it
This mod is really cool and fun. I like the ways it plays, the boat is cool and fast but not in a cheaty way.
I really wish you could place them as shelters (as was part of their original use) or craft racks for them to store a few.

I made one birch and maple, it's on the floor, i have inventory space, hotbar space, bag space, but the canoe is not pickable.
What did i miss ?

Rabidcoyote21 RAChoco Hold control and then use your scroll wheel to glide into the backpack slots in the hotbar. I will admit, this took me hours to figure out apperently. I didn't know I could hold the backpack hotbar.
Bannta I can't select it in the hotbar because it is in the backpack slot
On 1.20.12 I can't get the canoe to fit in an inventory or hotbar slot, only the expansion slots. I believe I'm having the same issue Rabidcoyote21 is.

Rabidcoyote21, it takes a backpack slot, then jump in the water, SHIFT click it at the water area you're aiming at while having the canoe selected in your hotbar(like placing a skep). Remember to Control-click when adding stuff to the canoe or it will pop the canoe on the ground. Once you get the first item in it like a chest or an oil lamp (fix that as well), it won't pop or be able to be picked up until you offload everything.

Could you patch it to actually use birch bark from Ancient Tools mod instead of birch logs?

Update: sadly this has not solved the issue. Still the moment I try to place the canoe I get hit with "No such entity 'canoemod:canoe-barkcanoe-aged' loaded"
Update 2: Got it to work!
I have a question on how to use the canoes. Im in creative just testing them out and whatnot and I can't seem to even get them in the water. I can't spawn them in or anthing. I can't even put them in my inventory, just the slot to expand your inventory.
There's another change I made to correct the lantern position on the front of the boat. Still can't get the oil lamp to stick to that position.

And I added underneath swimmingOffsetYByType under attributes. I believe that puts the canon between the raft and the boat for speed. That way, the boat still has a need to build.
@CircuitPwne Certainly wouldn't say no to it. I tried @Bannta 's fix and all it done for me is break the entity entirely sadly aka making it impossible to place the canoe so I'm at a bit of a loss.
So a Fix would be nice given that my hopes for there to be an official update is slim, judged by the december 17th last update date.
Bannta As another lover of this mod, thanks for the change suggestions; made it easy to "fix" it for my preferences. Primarily I wanted to be able to control the canoe from all seats 😃

so i got most of it working in 1.21
I'm unable to get oil lamps from the mounting to the front. I can put in a Lantern, however, it obstructs your view.
Here are the changes I made to correct. Hopefully, this will speed up the author in updating this great mod
Note: on multiplayer issues were happening on the middle seat 1AP, you can set that to false under controllable. Should fix the anomaly that RubixRaptor was having in this civ-world series on 1.20

While it mechanically works in 1.21, the animations are all borked. I kneel on the water beside the canoes as I row them.
will the mod be updated for 1.21?
I really wish I could put a lantern in the oil lamp slot, there's literally enough space for it.
Almost works as is on 1.21.rc6, but the position of the player on the canoe is strangely offset so they end up sitting in the air next to the boat.
Just confirming this works in 1.20.12 if anyone was wondering... also just in case you are like me and got stuck for 5 min panicking you get out of the boat by shifting twice.
Just want to get permission to upload a patched version removing the pitch requirment for my personal use on a server with friends. If I have to pass it along manually I understand. Big fan of your mod btw. (Note while pitch is removed I added resin as a replacement.)

Could this use a sprint option? That would probably allow @GrimmSpector to paddle with or against currents when used alongside the rivers mod.

I'm playing with the rivers mod, it would be nice to tie our canoe to a post with a rope so that it can stay in place without following the currents.

For those (like me) struggling with getting things on the Canoe, at least for me I couldnt get on any baskets or the pot but i figure out that if you have all your backpack slots filled then I could add empty pots and reed baskets to the canoe. So put down the Canoe, put on a backpack or something to full that slot then try again. You cant pick up the canoe again with pots etc on it. (For me that meant connecting the sea and several riverse by makeing water tunnels connecting them all so I could move bases lol.)
Finally got enough stuff to build the thing, but it bugged. The character now wears the canoe like pants.
Must be due to some incompatibility with the Hydrate or Diedrate mod. Turning off the shift+click to drink have "fixed" the issue.
The oar storage zone is hard to hit due to huge size of other storage zones. Can you set them lower or make them half as high?

Hey all, I noticed some people were wondering about customizing the canoe speed.
If you open "\AppData\Roaming\VintagestoryData\Mods\canoemod\assets\canoemod\entities\water\barkcanoe.json" in a text editor and make a new line under " shouldSwivelFromMotion: false," and paste:
speedMultiplierByType: {
"canoe-barkcanoe-*": 1.5,
},
and save it, you'll get a speed faster than rafts but slower than sailboats. If you're using the faster boats mod you should set the 1.5 to 2.0 instead.
you'll need to extract the mod zip to do this, and delete the zipped copy and rezip the extracted folder.
Is there any way to patch this to be able to move against hte flow in Rivers mod, but ideally not change it's speed in non flowing water??

I just tested the Mod with Game Version 1.20.3 and it works just fine.
Needed to look up the mod page again becaue after crafting the canooe, i could not pick it up.

You need to have one empty backpack / bag slot and the canoe goes in there. You cannot pick it up in the hotbar or the inventory.
With [CTRL] + [%Backpack-Slot-Number%] you can actually have that slot active "in your hands".
%Backpack-Slot-Number% can be either 1, 2, 3 or 4, regarding on what slot your canoe has gone after you emptied that slot of a backpack / bag if you had one in it before.
Did not yet test the speed but i would like to ask for an update with config file, just like some commentators before did.

Not a big deal, but as far as I can tell canoe recipe conflicts with 'In Dappled Groves' due to this mod removing the standard axe and splitting it into seperate tools with dfferent funcitons.
I think the back most reed chest slot may be bugged, when i open it sometimes the reed chests inventory slots dont show up and sometimes it throws a server exception and boots me.
Also if it matters at all i do think itd be acceptable for the canoe to require leather in the recipe and a config file to be able to give it a higher speed than the base game raft would be nice.
Would compatibility with carry-on be possible? to place a filled storage container you have in your hands in a storage slot/pick it back up out with carry-on?
Does it have to be empty to pick it up or am I just a dunce? (as in no chest or anything in it)
I love this idea, I have been thinking "I wish there was a simple upgrade from this horrible little raft. Why is there no dinghy or canoe?"

could there be a modconfig that alters canoe speed?
Is it possible another mod could prevent the canoe from being pilotable? Crafted with and equipped it with chests, basket, and oil lamp, but I can't move at all after sitting down with oar in hand.
Edit. Right after commenting I figured out that you cannot row from the aft seat, but have to be seated in the middle seat. Might be good to mention that somewhere.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to place the canoe. I have an empty bag slot and picked it up, but I simply cannot figure out how to get the thing to go into the water unfortunately. I have a (fairly) hefty modlist going, so there may be a conflict that I'm just unaware of, but I've tried everything and I'm McLosing it lol

Disregard this, I completely forgot how to put a backpack into my hands (CTRL+1,2,3,4 for anyone else who blanks like I did).
Hey, great mod. However, there seems to be a pretty major glitch for multiplayer. When two players step into one canoe, and the second person tries rowing, the canoe will duplicate on their side, allowing them to travel around, whilst it looks to others like the player is still in the back of the canoe they got into.
Hey, really like the mod. But I have ran into a glitch, and I don't know if youre aware of it yet so I just wanted to inform you about it. When you get in the canoe with two people, and two people try rowing in the same boat, it causes a glitch where, for the second person who got in, the boat duplicates.
the changes to the quern recidpe in 1.20 change the precursur requirement for crafting the canoe from 1 ingot of metal to 12 ingots. since the quern now takes a hammer and chisel to craft. on our server im probably going to adjus tthe recipes for the quern to compensate because thats rediculous. but this negatively affects the canoe mod quite a bit. and all because hte recipes require powdered charcoal/coal. i might also try to patch th erecipe for the pithc to only use resin or to handle unpowdered coal instead. anything to avoid interacting with the new quern requirements this early in the game. i have newbs on my server that are taking it slow to progress into the metal ages.
For future releases, please include the version on the file. It helps a lot on updating for single players!
CrashMink I do use that mod, and now that hanging oil lamps was updated it looks like the issue has been fixed! I can attach the lamp to the canoe now even with hanging oil lamps installed.

How do you get the pitch glue out of the pot? It vanished XD
I'm not sure if it's your mod causing this issue or not but I'm having issues with pitch glue no longer repairing clutter due to it not being inside of a pot anymore.
Kaziek i could not use lamps either and I assume it is because of hanging oil lamps mod and the way it changes the lamps. do you use hanging oil lamps mod?
Love the mod, this fits in with vanilla perfectly! I just have one problem; I can't add a light to the front of the canoe. Is it currently bugged or is there something else you have to do to be able to attach it?
I don't suppose we'd be able to carry our elk in the canoe?
@Savrs It doesn't drop into any water source like the raft or sail boat, it sort of drops as a pick-up and dissapears after second.
It would be excellent to have a way to config the speed of the canoe much like how this mod changes raft & boat speeds!

If you make one of the backpacks active and press shift RMB on the canoe, the canoe will drop as loot and you have to pick it up again, freeing up the backpack slot.

You must have one of your backpack/basket slots free. The canoe is carried like a beehive or trap.
I can't seem to place or pickup a completed canoe after completing the craft.
I tried to add a clay vessel, it worked. Basket still doesn't though an the oil lamp won't equip either.

Catching a canoe with a basket is cool! Apparently the basket considers the canoe as an entity. Try holding down ctrl. It will work. Apparently the lantern cannot be installed. But the oil lamp is installed in the slot on the bow of the boat.
iuno Im an idiot, i had 1.0.0, i can pickup and place the canoe now, however i still cannot seem to put any containers on the canoe or a lantern. If i try to use a reed basket it says "This animal is too large or too wild to catch with a basket"

I only added the ability to pick the canoe up in v1.0.1, so make sure that you are using the most up to date version of the mod. And just to confirm you are using one of the v1.20 rc builds right?
Like I said It's using the exact same code as the raft, so it should behave exactly the same.
iuno I didn't have any containers in it, was just testing it in a lake and I couldn't pick it up after.
Paradoxal Make sure you don't have any containers or other stuff attached to the canoe before you try picking it up. It uses exactly the same pickup logic as the raft and needs to be completely empty for you to grab it.

I'm trying to pickup my Canoe, but it doesn't seem to be able to be picked up. I believe Shift + Right Click picks up Rafts, but it doesn't work for the Canoe. I was wondering if you knew of anything that could be causing a problem? I've also opened a bag slot and it still doesn't get picked up.

Savrs I don't understand your complaint, this mod author is offering a free mod that you can choose to use or not to use and you're complaining that it doesn't perfectly fit your expectation. While it might not be faster than the makeshift raft, it's still an upgrade that has more capacity for players/storage, the ability to place a light on it, and it just looks nicer than having some logs bundled together.

Yes, you are right, I don't have to use your mod. But I would really like to get rid of the need to use the very slow vanilla boats, and I was hoping that your canoe would help me with this. Unfortunately, it is also slow.
suggestion for this mod: a special better version of the carved oar that rows the canoe faster, but it is much more expensive to make.
Savrs Fortunately you don't have to use it if you don't want to. The point is to provide an intermediate boat option between the log raft and the sailboat and provide some variety, not to completely break the already generous game balance around boats and make the vanilla boats useless.
The speed of the birchbark canoe is exactly the same as that of the raft and the sailboat just like it says in the mod description above, and I am not going to change that until I transition this project from a content to a code mod. When I do change it I will keep the sailboat as the faster option because sails are just faster than paddles and oars, that's just how physics works. If you want to change the speed, feel free to download a mod like Configure Everything and change it to whatever you like. You need a good amount of glue to make it, but that's because you're gluing the entire outer hull of the boat together. That's a material-intensive job. 8 pieces of resin isn't really that hard to get either, that's a trip or two to a pine forest. If you don't like the recipe, you can easily change the amounts or the items required by editing the recipe JSON file in the mod folder.
The speed of the canoe is as low as the raft and the sailboat.
We already have floating craft on which you can fall asleep.

What is the point of your mod? Please increase the speed three times.
Otherwise it will be just a useless item. And also requiring a slot from the backpack. The amount of glue required for manufacturing is simply enormous.
Spending 8 parts of resin is an unaffordable luxury.

Auro That is the plan eventually. I've got it working in test builds, but I'm not exactly a great programmer and I don't want to straight up copy a bunch of the base game's code (at least not without getting permission) so it will probably take a while for me to figure out how to work around that.
Are you going to adapt this to use the new ship building step by step proccess?

Unfortunately it won't, it relies on the new vehicle and attachment system in 1.20.
Any idea if this will also work with v1.19.8 ? I prefer to play on stable.

I was thinking about that but I haven't done it for 2 reasons: reason 1 is that this is currently only a content mod and the speed for boat entities is hardcoded in the current version, meaning I'd need to start messing with the code to get that to work. That's on the to-do list though! Reason 2 is that I don't want to touch the vanilla entities too much when I do transition this mod to a code one as that might break compatibility with other mods depending on how I do it.

In my defense the base game makes that mistake too, haha. I'll change it whenever I put out a new version. There's STILL some Z-fighting going on in a few small spots on the canoe model so I have other stuff to fix too.

Hello! I just made my first canoe, the process was great progression wise I think and I'm loving it! I'm a big fan of boats so this is amazing, thank you for making this mod (: I like how the player sits in the canoe as well, nice work here ^^
Sorry to niggle but what you've got there is a paddle, not an oar. Oars are for rowing. Looks great though!
you should make the carved oar move the normal raft faster if you use it instead of using a crude oar

I just added the ability to move the canoe around in an empty bag slot. It's bigger than the raft so I don't think it should really fit in the player's inventory, so this seems like a decent compromise.
