Latest release (for Vintage Story 1.21.1 - 1.21.4, potentially outdated):
BottomsUp_v1.2.0.zip  1-click install

I was playing on my server with some friends, and I built a tavern. As I decorated it, I quickly found that there wasn't much to add other than some cups and jugs. The bar was pretty bland. So I made this. It adds some glass bottles of various shapes and sizes. They can be made from any glass color, and can be finished with one of several different metals to customize the cap and label.

This mod uses Glassmaking for crafting the bottles. It also adds a few recipes for creating the glass blends from Glassmaking, since no recipes exist by default that I'm aware of. Note that glassmaking is a pretty end-game endeavor. You won't be making any nice bottles without steel, firebrick, and the semi-rare materials required for some of the embellishment.

Process and tips for bottle-making:

  1. Build yourself a smeltery. Note that the small smeltery provided by Glassmaking doesn't really work right... You'll have to make the large one. Ensure that you've got all four fireboxes installed.
  2. Get yourself a glass blend for whatever color glass you want, either by making the blend from scratch, or from smashing an existing block of glass with a hammer.
  3. Add your blend to the smeltery and heat it up. A single bottle requires 250 units of glass, which is a single item's worth of glass blend. Note that glassmaking requires high temperatures--I think only charcoal or coke will suffice.
  4. Once it's melted, get your glass blower's pipe and remove the glass. Use your tools and follow the process for the piece you're making. You can find this in the handbook or in the tooltip of the pipe. If you select the wrong recipe, you can craft the pipe with a hammer to reset it. You can also do this with a workpiece on the pipe to get some glass shards back and re-melt them.
  5. Once it's done, you'll have to anneal it in the Annealer. Leave it there for a few hours, but make sure the temperature doesn't drop too low!
  6. An annealed bottle can be finished with the appropriate materials.
  7. Fill your bottle and enjoy!

Updates:

v1.1.0:

  • Added some glass drinkware: a pint glass, wine glass, rocks glass, shot glass, and highball

Future plans:

  • More bottles
  • More drinkware
  • Maybe some more utilitarian things like jars

This mod is new, and I only half-know what I'm doing. Please be gentle, and bear with me while I work out any problems. If you run into any issues, drop a comment here or ping me on the Vintage Story discord.

  • Changed the "normal" glass type to be plain glass instead of quartz glass. This will probably break existing quartz glass items. Sorry. But technically quartz is supposed to be a lower tier of glass, and the plain glass texture looks better anyway.
  • Redid two of the bottles from scratch, they look a lot better now
  • Redid the contents models for uniform bottle wall thickness
  • Added tong transforms for everything.

Added drinkware: pint glass, rocks glass, highball, shotglass, and wine glass. The glassblowing recipe for the wine glass is a placeholder because I really can't be bothered to build another one of those recipes right now.

Added a creative tab

thanks, took a while to get enough refractory bricks for the large smelter but it works with no issues

💬 Cthugha , Oct 21st at 5:55 PM

tooobles Well, like I mentioned on this mod page, the small smeltery is just terribly broken. Don't use it. The large smeltery usually works, but you MUST have all four fireboxes installed, fueled, and lit. But... Sometimes it still seems to break. Rejoining the world seems to fix it sometimes, but other than that, I dunno.

💬 tooobles, Oct 21st at 5:32 PM

I saw your comment on the Glassmaking mod page about how you encountered issues with how the progress seems to get stuck sometimes, either the temperature will stop increasing, or the progress on either the melting or bubbling step will just stop. Since that mod author doesnt seem to be active anymore I thought I'd ask here if you ever found a solution to your problem?

Adfg got examples?

💬 Adfg, Oct 17th at 3:44 AM

Getting a bunch of error codes about recipes not resolving on server boot

💬 Cthugha , Oct 13th at 1:09 AM

Yeah I've encountered that issue as well, it's a problem with Glassmaking. Annealing at high temperatures and quenching is also an issue with Glassmaking. I wish it supported these things, but as far as I know it doesn't. This isn't a code mod, and I don't intend to make it so.

cool mod

Game Version 1.21.1
Mod Version 1.2.0

not entirely sure if its your mod or the glassmaking mod, but it was using your crafting
when making the glassware, after completed and putting into the annealer, once it gets to 100% annealed (due note its still 1200 degrees plus)
when you remove it from the annealer while its still hot and no tongs in hand, the client shuts down as if crashing

i do not have any logs to provide as none were generated

other than that, i was successful in making the glass
i do find it silly that you can then after getting the glass annealed go over to a body of water and quench the glass with 0 worries of it exploding lol
maybe add this feature in in the future as hot glass rapidly cooled down in water should explode
Cthugha

Spoiler
Why quenching hot annealed glass with water is a bad idea
  • Thermal shock: Glass has low thermal conductivity. If you submerge hot glass in water, the outer layer will cool and contract almost instantly, while the hotter inner layers remain expanded. This dramatic difference in temperature creates immense stress, causing the glass to fracture and shatter.
  • Safety hazard: The violent shattering of glass due to thermal shock is dangerous and unpredictable. The glass can break explosively, sending large, sharp fragments everywhere.
  • Contradictory processes: Quenching with water fundamentally reverses the purpose of annealing. Annealing is a controlled, gradual cooling process, while water quenching is an uncontrolled, extremely rapid process that creates stress rather than relieves it.

such a great mod concept!

love it!

💬 SONZINA, Oct 10th at 5:32 PM

This is such a nice idea.

💬 oneil, Oct 9th at 8:38 AM

At last, someone that use the glassmaking mod ! thanks mate ! If you manage to make it work for vanilla glass making or other mod like bricklayer, that would be fantastic !

💬 Cthugha , Oct 9th at 12:34 AM

InfiniteSilver There's a patch for Bricklayers and Glassmaking, but my understanding is that it's not working correctly right now... At a glance the patch doesn't seem that complicated, so autism-willing I might take a crack at it at some point. No promises though. I think I'd like this to support Bricklayers glass stuff as well, but I want to get a nice base of stuff here first before I worry about adding compat for a dozen new glass types.

💬 InfiniteSilver, Oct 8th at 11:34 PM

Love this idea. Can never have enough decoration mods.

Would be great to see future compatibility with Bricklayers if someone can make that and Glassmaking play nicely together.

💬 Teagan, Oct 8th at 2:27 PM

Thanks for this mod!

💬 El_Neuman, Oct 8th at 11:18 AM

Love this simple, but amazing mod!!

💬 purple8cloud, Oct 8th at 11:18 AM

the first mode using glassmaking

💬 Redumulis, Oct 8th at 7:05 AM

Oh yeah baby. Thats what i've been looking for!
