Find resin with a mod that naturally integrates with the game survival mechanics.
Salty's Bark Beetle is designed to be a immersive approach to finding resin in the wild without making the resin glow or something like that.
In real life, resin is produced to protect the tree from insects, one of those insects is the bark beetle. Those little adorable creatures produce a distinct sound.
Use the new Bark Beetle sound to guide yourself to resin.

would it be possible to make how frequently the beetle chirps customisable? currently i've spent over 24 hours playing the game with the mod and the only time i heard the beetle was when intentionally waited by a resin deposit for a couple minutes just to sanity check it was actually working 😭
thank you for your mods too; so many of them are must-haves for me now, especially the mining and woodcutting ones!

Later versions work just fine, the sound just takes a looooot loooooonger to play out.
SaltyWater echoing v1.0.3 doesn't seem to function on my end. v1.0.2 did. Thought I was going crazy.

v1.0.2 of this mod still works great on 1.21.1, and I absolutely hear the beetles. Might give that a try?
Same here, standing next to resin and no sounds at all.
I can hear bees fine, so my ambient sound levels are good, but I get nothing from the bark beetles.
Sadly, I hear nothing even while right next to resin. I'm at 1.21.1.
I'd still really appreciate any way of changing or configuring the frequency of sound.
Edit: For anyone wondering, 1.0.2 works still on 1.21.1, and although I have Prospect Together installed on the same server I'm not getting any errors in the logs.

I think the thumbnail looks perfectly fine personally, it doesn't look like slop, souless, or generic. I think it looks fine and fits your mod great.
hey SaltyWater, had a funny thought while running through a forest for resin. What if, similar to buzzy bees and the bee particle, this made the black resin particles into oversized pine digger beetles. Just barely big enough to get the gist of what they should be. we have them all over at home and I always found them wierdly cute.

Lovely work as always.. but Ive got to say, did you really need the AI thumbnail for this? All of your mods have lovely thumbnails and mods are insanly well made. There is no need for Ai slop, it looks souless and generic (plus normalizes Ai stealing and regurgitation of art) while all your previous mods look so cozy and human!

Yeah, you're right. I just had to tweak my sound settings a bit and turn off some of the louder ambient noises that were overiding it for me. The sweet hum of beetles is fueling my resin empire now!

Yeah! Tested and on my end it's working fine.
Try 1.0.2 if you feel beetle sounds aren´t triggering often.
Does this work on 1.12.10? The accesbility mod tells me the sound is playing, but I can't hear it at all and don't see any beetle effects. Does it only occur every minute or so?
I took a look in the mod, but I can't find a way to modify the frequency of the noise. Is there a way to increase it, say, halfway between 1.0.3 and 1.0.2?
I'd love some mod-specific sound control. Command/config fine is fine. It being ambient means that i need to turn ambient higher to hear it, but the waves on the shores just completely destroy my ear drums

tkdestroyer2 Intended behavior! It supposed to be little beetles flying around the resin block.
Some will also stick to it, it's random.

I love this mod, but even though I KNOW there arent snakes, evey time I hear it I jump around expecting an in game rattler to bite me.
Thank you so much for making this great mod. I love using it. The beetle sounds were too frequent before for sure,but now they are too infrequent. Please, make it something in the middle. Now it is much harder to locate the resin. And can easily miss it due to the reliance on the sound alone during exploration. The efforts are much appreciated.

Yskar bettle sound uses the ambient sounds from vanilla, it should be tied to the sliders on sound menu!
Xerog Yskar A temporary workaround would be to use the Acessibility Tweaks mod to turn the volume up, as it's able to toggle all game sounds (to my knowledge), including those added by mods. Not perfect as it does require you to download a separate mod for volume control, but it helps that AT is a generally nice and useful mod to have.
Beetle sound volume config in options menu (or command) would be very nice!
Ok I like the mod. But for me the noise the little bugs make is not loud enough to hear over the rain or sometimes over the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind. Also I live near redwoods. A whole forest of them in game. And I can hear the bugs on one of my redwoods. sounds wierd but That is the only time I have heard them loud enough because it was a calm peaceful day that day. I don't usually get many of those.
I tried this mod, I gotta say it's a really bright idea to make resin spotting very immersing. Unfortunately for me it causes minor lags as there might most probably some unpleasant interaction between this mod and one of the other gazillion mods I have installed. :/
Also I agree it would be nice to have the sound play with random pauses, a constant noise for the beetle isn't ideal.
Is it possible to add an option to make only unharvested resin logs produce noise?
Hey guys, so I tried the Buzzwords thing but turns out it is not a good idea for the resin log. User can easily get overwhelmed with feedback specially in dense forest areas (too many notifications) thus overlapping each other getting very confusing very fast.

Herr_und_Meister I kinda agree, mod is a cool feature but it does make it a bit too easy imo to pick out where the resin is. I think a config for it would be nice since some people probably wouldnt like that change.

But for my personal taste, it is a bit to easy to gather the resin now.
Would it be possible to add some random pause to the beetle sounds, so that they don't occur permanently?
And could the radius in which we hear the sounds be customized with a config file? Would make this mod even better

Searching for resin is one of my few gripes with the game and I am so glad this mod exists now! I also checked out all of your other mods and I really like most of the manual ones you're doing. I am all for making the game more immersive and making use of UIs as sparse as possbile :)
Would you consider making a similar mod for terra preta, the idea to use insect or just natural life to point towards certain resources is great!

SaltyWater Oh no, I wouldn't ask you for that. Unless it'd be something you personally feel you'd like to make for other people. I just personally have a difficult time with directional sound these days, it's real tedious but not too bad. Thank you for the consideration though.

Savou the mod spawns dark bluish particles in the log block to represent the beetles. maybe I can make you a special version with increased particles? It would help with the visibility at least.
Very cool idea! Would be awesome if infected (resin) trees spawned a beetle every once in a while that infected another nearby tree.
Wow, I never have trouble finding resin but if I did, I can't think of a more amazing way to fix it. Not only does it help find resin but also adds ambiance and life to the world. You even look at the resin in a new way. Instead of just seeing it as a way for the game to put the resource in your face. You see it as a sign of life in the world. This is pure genius.
Seeing this, makes me wish I wasn't 50% deaf.
