Hey, did some Iron hatch doors today and wanted to quench them. Sadly it does only work the old way, Right Clicking a bucket/barrel of water places the hatch doors sadly :D

Nevertheless a great mod! Keep going :)

💬 The_Box, Nov 21st at 7:06 PM

SaltyWater Yup!  There are some ways to pull it off, but it's very, VERY specific methods and formulations for the glass, and even then there's a fair bit of danger.

That said, there could be a use case for allowing things like glass rod or prince rupert drops that can be safely quenched and could be used in game for different things.  But that's an entirely different idea and basically a whole different mod really.

💬 SaltyWater , Nov 21st at 6:34 PM

The_Box

interesting! I had no idea!

💬 The_Box, Nov 21st at 5:38 PM

Narg Well the issue there is that you can't really quench glass.  If you quench a small part, you get a prince rupert's drop.  If you try and quench a lot, it basically turns into a bomb.  Metals can be quenched, glass, not so much.

💬 Narg, Nov 21st at 5:15 PM

SaltyWater love the mod, small quible I recently noticed, glass seems to just place no matter what. I get you can just craft/use it with the tongs, or wait for it to cool off, but I would still love to somehow be able to quench it without just throwing the stack in my pond.

💬 Nachi, Nov 21st at 12:50 PM (modified Nov 21st at 12:51 PM)

Kynrala Sorry for the late response, but  I am also using Toolsmith in addition to Manual Quenching. However, I've never had that issue, so I'm not sure what's going on with your situation.

Edit: maybe it's because I always quench in barrels and buckets, nevermind.

💬 Kynrala, Oct 25th at 11:49 AM

Hi there! Love using this mod, recently tho also started using Toolsmith, and the new tool heads don't seem to like the inputs for manual quenching. Not sure if it's a me problem or an incompatibility entirely. Basically, using the same keybinds/combination I was before Toolsmith, things would quench in hand correctly. After Toolsmith, they instead just place on the ground in the water. Any chance someone smarter than I could look in to this?

whater?

💬 Potato_Spud, Oct 8th at 11:20 AM

can you add a config to allow quenching to exhaust water from barrels and buckets. Can the config also scale the ratio of temperature to water, so defualt it would be 100c to 0.1 liters.

💬 merryclefairy, Oct 7th at 3:19 AM

why was u holding it in your bare hands instead of tongs?!?!?!!?!

i'm assuming it works with tongs too

💬 Michael97, Sep 27th at 1:08 AM

I second the request of quenching in waterlogged blocks.

💬 LivCi, Aug 29th at 7:51 PM

Could you please make it work with waterlogged blocks too?

💬 Lhosson, Aug 25th at 5:28 PM (modified Aug 25th at 5:31 PM)

Falk5T This is such a great idea. I was chatting to my wife a few days ago about quenching cooling metal down, and how it would be awesome if there was a game dynamic that utilised quenching as a tempering mechanic. The way you listed your proposal is spot-on.

I'd love to see a talented modder implement this, and I suspect a few thousand players would appreciate the new benefits of such a system.

But it must be compatible with SmithingPlus if it wants a chance to be adopted, as that mod is fantastic too.

SaltyWater How 'bout it Salty? ^_^ You up for the challenge?

💬 Falk5T, Aug 21st at 1:10 AM (modified Aug 21st at 1:25 AM)

adres4t If oil quenching were to be implemented, it should also come with its own benefits. The problem is that water quenching currently has no drawbacks, so those would need to be added as well.

My proposal would be a thre-tiered approach:

  • Water Quenching makes steel tools (not iron, since quenching has no effect on iron) very hard but also brittle. This could translate into slightly higher damage for weapons and faster mining with pickaxes, but at the cost of reduced durability. By default this could be off, but water quenching might also cause cracks due to high internal stresses. An audible ringing or cracking sound could indicate this. Tools might then either break very quickly or become unusable/require reforging.
  • Oil Quenching produces tools that are slightly less hard than water-quenched ones, but with higher durability and almost no chance of cracking. This creates a clear incentive to use oil quenching for efficiency and reliability.
  • Tempering restores toughness to hardened steel tools. In reality, cutting tools like blades are tempered at ~180–250 °C, impact tools like pickaxes at ~250–300 °C, and armor or springs at ~300–400 °C. They should be held at this temperature for about 30–60 minutes (depending on thickness; holding longer has no real drawbacks). For gameplay purposes, it would be fine to just heat once to a set temperature to achieve tempering. A more in-depth system could allow three different tempering tiers. However, if a blade is overheated, it should lose durability, and the same should apply to pickaxes tempered at too low a temperature. Perfect tempering would then yield peak durability.

Instead of relying on an exact temperature display (which feels unrealistic for this type of game), players could use the natural tempering colors as indicators. For gameplay clarity, three easily distinguishable colors could represent the tiers: straw yellow, cornflower blue, and a deep violet.

This would be more the foundation of a complete blacksmithing rework mod, rather than just a simple addition that lets you hold a bar in your hand haha.

💬 adres4t, Aug 8th at 10:00 PM

Now we need quenching in oil.

💬 Wandour, Aug 8th at 9:07 PM

make it so manual quenching is 2x normal one
effort makes effiu=c

💬 VintedStory, Jul 13th at 6:07 PM

would be pretty cool if this also increased stats a bit if done properly, similar to how it can harden metal irl.

💬 KeiMuriKoe, Jun 11th at 12:09 AM

When switch Ctrl and shift in control settings, sprint and sneak. It doesn't affect barrel and bucket

💬 RowanSkie, Jun 1st at 8:38 AM

When I had this (for the 1.0.4 at least), it didn't detect my waterlogged slab as a quenchable water source.

💬 DecaByte, May 31st at 7:36 AM

SaltyWater With the new update 1.0.5 when i place blocks in water it would make the sound.

💬 SaltyWater , May 30th at 11:30 AM

gluemchen

It does!! It's a vanilla game mechanic!

the GIF was recorded in a version that didn't had the tong holding transform.

💬 gluemchen, May 30th at 1:41 AM

Would be so much cooler if it required you to use tonges to hold it. Would also visually look cool.

💬 HaraiseTenshi, Apr 7th at 4:00 PM

For those with xSkill https://news.kalataka.ru/blacksmithenhancements works with the quenching Skills.

💬 Ultrcombraun, Apr 2nd at 2:33 AM

Just so everyone asking for Xskills compat is aware, you can get the bonus from quenching by throwing whatever item you smithed into water

💬 Kelvall, Mar 29th at 3:39 PM

Would you consider sharing your source code so others can work on compatibility patches?

💬 Calbain, Mar 29th at 3:24 PM

Looks like the last or last few updates broke this one, it's causing crashes now.

💬 Rowanas, Mar 26th at 4:08 PM

Ah, exactly as Xandu said, there's the comment. Yes please. I can't go back to throwing stuff inaccurately into a pile of water, missing, picking it up, trying again, faffing for ages, wasting space in my forge, burning myself etc. I need this mod but I also need that sweet, sweet quality bonus from xskills :D

💬 Xandu, Mar 19th at 8:24 PM

Hi. I think this mod sets the temperature attributes directly instead of using the Collectible.SetTemperature() method. Switching to the method should make it work with xskills. Just wanted to say this here because it seems like quite some people have commented about this.

💬 xCoiotex, Mar 19th at 12:55 AM

hello make this compatible with xSkills pls

💬 RazorzMcLazorz, Mar 4th at 2:43 AM

I wanted this but since its not compatible with XSkills i had to decide not to =-(

💬 Eurielle, Mar 2nd at 4:28 PM

I'd adore if this was compatible with xskills!

💬 Shroomster, Feb 25th at 11:07 PM

I'm seeing other commenters note that it seems to not work with the 'xskills' mod's quality perk, which lets you get a quality on your items you throw in water to cool down. Would love to see this get a compatibility patch, as I have been yearning for a mod like this, but am also a 'xskills' user. Great mods!

💬 Lightpowder, Feb 19th at 9:33 PM

Yeah, same here. Noticed it way later into my playthrough lol.
SaltyWater

💬 _PaperCrane, Feb 10th at 8:24 AM

I noticed the same thing happening as vandawn. I like the immersive quenching enough that I hadn't bothered testing it out until I made several stacks of nails and quenched them all at the same time.

💬 vandawn, Feb 5th at 4:07 PM

Really great mod! Perfect for survival bases, were you cant just create water. One thing that I observed, is that it doesn't work with XSkill's quality, where the quality increses when you quench. SaltyWater

💬 SaltyWater , Jan 28th at 11:57 AM

MrFastZombie Thank you sir! ^^

💬 MrFastZombie, Jan 28th at 12:43 AM

I am a huge fan of mods like this that just make crafting more immersive, keep 'em coming!

💬 SaltyWater , Jan 27th at 11:06 AM

Ejooj Hey! Already works with barrels and buckets

💬 Ejooj, Jan 27th at 3:43 AM

Can we have it work on filled barrels as well for those who play with no water source creation enabled ? :P

💬 VividVoid, Jan 21st at 12:15 PM

with absolutely no end to them.

This only seems to occur while someone is actively quenching. For single player I can see it not being an issue but we use the mod on the server, which makes it quite a problem :)

bringitonwimps Only when they release the stable 1.20

💬 bringitonwimps, Dec 29th 2024 at 3:27 PM

by any chance these mods coming to 1.20 soon?

💬 DraGonKniGht20, Dec 22nd 2024 at 8:06 PM

SaltyWater You are the big cheese, friend! Thanks a whole bunch!

💬 SaltyWater , Dec 22nd 2024 at 3:52 AM

DraGonKniGht20 Hey!! Thanks for the feedback, I've released a hotfix.

💬 DraGonKniGht20, Dec 18th 2024 at 9:45 PM

@SaltyWater has anyone experienced inconsistent quenching? Like sometimes it'll work and other times it wont. Like last night i was doing some smithing, made a wrench for a friend and it quenched fine. Then I was making a knife 5 minutes later, and I would sit there holding on the barrel of water that i had just quenched the wrench in, and that dang knife blade was not quenching in the slightest.

edit: I'm playing on 1.19.8

💬 SaltyWater , Dec 18th 2024 at 12:15 PM

MineAnPlay Right? Maybe it was on the off hand? Does it have that flag? Was you quenching something right before the error?

💬 MineAnPlay, Dec 18th 2024 at 11:27 AM

SaltyWaterHmm, weird. Can't seem to reproduce after the first time. Maybe a caching issue? When the error first occurred I was able to replicate it in single player but now that I am doing more testing can't seem to replicate it. If I get more info/replicate the issue will give more details.

💬 SaltyWater , Dec 18th 2024 at 8:34 AM

MineAnPlay Strange, The mod already detects items that can be heat up (The mod checks if said item has the temperature attribute in its data tree). What are the properties of said book? I do not play with XSkills. I will take a look into it and do some testing next year! Thanks for the feedback!

💬 MineAnPlay, Dec 18th 2024 at 6:50 AM

Found a critical bug. "Eating" XSkills books while looking at water causes manual quenching to be detected (which it shouldn't in the first place) which results in manual quenching to over react and spam the logs with the following error:

Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at ManualQuenching.GradualQuenching(IServerPlayer player, ItemSlot slot, String playerUID, Boolean isBarrel, Boolean isBucket)
at ManualQuenching.<>c__DisplayClass4_3.<OnGameTick>b__0(Single _)
at Vintagestory.Common.EventManager.TriggerGameTick(Int64 ellapsedMilliseconds, IWorldAccessor world) in VintagestoryLib\Common\EventManager.cs:line 57
at Vintagestory.Server.CoreServerEventManager.TriggerGameTick(Int64 ellapsedMilliseconds, IWorldAccessor world) in VintagestoryLib\Server\ServerEventManager.cs:line 123
at Vintagestory.Server.ServerMain.Process() in VintagestoryLib\Server\ServerMain.cs:line 886

The error is spammed at a rate of 2000+ per second xD. Since it doesn't crash and continues to error, can easily eat up someones entire drive space (was over 100+mb after a minute) and since it is constantly spammed you can't interact with server console either.

The over reaction needs to be fixed first and black list XSkills books when the mod is detected (or maybe only detect "hot" items or items that can heat up? Not sure how it works in the backend exactly).

💬 Gregno24, Dec 9th 2024 at 1:25 AM

I've only tried copper but seems to work for 1.20 rc1

💬 gualeshadow, Dec 7th 2024 at 11:51 PM

Love the mod, however for some reason it doesn't work on iron for me, and even seems to stop the item from cooling down naturally if I try to quench it. I've tried quenching in both a barrel and a water block. Playing version 1.19.8 on Linux.

💬 SaltyWater , Dec 3rd 2024 at 10:57 PM

Antar Hey! Thank you so much for the kind words! you've made both of us smile! She thanked you for liking her art and sent kisses! ^^

💬 Antar, Dec 3rd 2024 at 7:12 AM

Legendary modder. Very good quality with animations and sound effects taken into account. Very good presentation too, your GF's art is great and gives everything a consistant look that makes you easily recognizable. I hope you keep it up! These manual mods are exactly what the game needs.

💬 SaltyWater , Dec 2nd 2024 at 8:57 PM

Afroman726 Hey thanks!! I can't take the credit for that, my gf does al the art haha! ^^

SaltyWater Your mod logos look so cool!!! Love your work! :D

💬 Savou, Nov 30th 2024 at 3:53 PM

HersheysWaffles Aye, quenching in oil does produce flames but last I checked it's quite the common practice within blacksmithing to quench in oil.

💬 HersheysWaffles, Nov 29th 2024 at 10:13 PM

pariba the oil would catch fire lol

💬 pariba, Nov 28th 2024 at 4:15 PM

Very nice. Would be awesome if we could quench blades in oil instead but I guess that would require either a mod like Expanded Foods or your own kind of oil to be added

💬 SaltyWater , Nov 28th 2024 at 1:17 PM

Jena_Thornwyrd Lets goooooooo <3

💬 Tadpole24, Nov 28th 2024 at 5:56 AM

I love your mods so much glad to see this one come out. I fell in love with this game because of how it feels and this just adds to the immersion! Keep up the good work and maybe one day we could see your mods as real features <3

💬 SniperGecko, Nov 28th 2024 at 4:16 AM

Willing to include shift-hold hot ingot on barrel of water support?

If only I'd read beyond the latest two comments. I'm sorry.

💬 SaltyWater , Nov 28th 2024 at 2:54 AM

Thalius Thank you for the kind words friend! I completely agree with you! Doing things manually is much more fun!
I will update'em once the stable is out! ^^

💬 Thalius, Nov 28th 2024 at 2:40 AM

Hey Salty! Just wanted to say I'm loving your mods. Very much the sort of stuff the game needs, in my personal opinion. More "manual" processes and less grid crafting. Can't wait to see the grid crafting feature done away with in VS altogether, one day.

Very much hoping and looking forward to seeing your mods updated for stable VS 1.20!

💬 SaltyWater , Nov 28th 2024 at 1:58 AM

Hey Mega_Gay yeah it would! I think it can be implemented!

💬 Mega_Gay, Nov 28th 2024 at 1:54 AM

Very neat, would be awesome if we could do this with barrels of water too, but I understand that might be difficult
